SIMPLOT GAMES
With over 2000 athletes from four countries and 20 states participating, the competition in Idaho was tough to say the least. And this brought out the best in the Titans. In what sounds like a broken record (I forgot- none of you know what a "record" is), the Lady Titans continued their assault on the Indoor Record board as four new marks were set.
Cidnee Davies ran an incredible 8.86 in the 60m hurdle final to finish in 8th place. This was not only a school record, but the fastest time ever run indoors by a Utah high school athlete. The seven girls in front of her were from California and North Carolina. Cidnee was also the top Utah finisher in the long jump placing 10th with a 17'06" mark. Isabella Williams ran a great 1600m run to finish 8th in a school record time of 5:09.04. This moves her into the top-25 on the Utah All-Time list. Brenn Flint threw 38'07.50 in the weight throw for a new indoor record. This put her in 13th place. She also threw 39'01.50 to place 9th in the shot put. The final school record for the Lady Titans came in the medley relay. Kayla Rees led off with a great 58.4 400m leg to put us in the lead. That time would have placed her in the top-8 in the open 400. Big 200 splits by Arlyne Arteaga (27.5) and Jentry Skidmore (26.1) kept up the record pace. And then Rachel Griffin ran a 2:29.9 anchor leg for the 800, a PR by over 10-seconds, to secure the record in 4:22.43. She probably set a PR in the 200 as she went out in 32 seconds and battled every challenge the entire way. It was a great race to watch as all four ran the very best race possible.
The Boys waited until the very last race of the indoor season to set their first school record. Colten Yardley ran 8.29 in the 60m hurdles to finish in a tie for 6th place. This was a new school record and also the fastest time by a Utah athlete this year. It is the #12 mark in Utah indoor history.
There were many impressive performances that didn’t make finals, but were still great efforts. Jentry Skidmore had a couple jumps within an inch of the qualifying mark of 16'09 in the long jump. Ammon Riley had two throws about 2" from making the final cut-off mark of 46' in the shot put. Jake Wakefield probably eclipsed the school record in the triple jump, but the effort wasn’t measured due to the big minimum mark. Tanner Kutterer ran a PR 9.07 in the 60m hurdles. That was the 5th fastest time by a sophomore in the event. Justin Cobabe’s diving handoff was a highlight, even though it won’t be used for an instructional video.
And last but certainly not least, great job by Coach Wilcox who turned in a very good 5:25.75 in the coaches 1600m run.

Thanks to everyone who helped make the great weekend possible, especially our "shuttle" service. The Andreasen’s, Jacobs, Yardley’s, Young’s, Burrell’s, Mr. Skidmore, Mr. Wood, and Mr. Rees made huge sacrifices to make the trip possible. Coach Wilcox was his usual support videoing, taking splits, and getting athletes ready to perform.
The performances of the meet could go to Kevin Hansen and Stephen Riley for spending the entire duration of the meet taking some great pictures.

And thanks to the entire TEAM for making this a great weekend. Everyone did a great job in following the rules and guidelines set up by the coaches. Perhaps someday I’ll reveal the real story behind the "calls from the front desk".
DISAPPOINTED or DISCOURAGED?
Being disappointed in a performance can help you work harder, train more intelligently, and take the necessary steps to improve. When an athlete feels discouraged, they have a tendency to lower or discard their goals, shirk or skip workouts, look for excuses for sub-par performances, etc. If you did not reach some of your goals you may have set for Indoor, let’s take the positive steps towards pursuing them during Outdoor. Disappointment can be good- feeling discouraged never helps.
