Titan Track Update - March 25, 2012

Nridge/LAYTON/FREMONT QUAD MEET
The Titans dominated this four-way meet Wednesday at Syracuse. The girls scored 139 points to run away from Northridge (52), Layton (48) and Fremont (3). One the boys side, the Titans finished with 201 points to easily outdistance Layton (32), Northridge (27) and Fremont (3). Fremont only brought their JV kids.

Sarah Sperry had a great meet winning the high jump (5'01, tying her own school record), shot put (30'09), discus (73'06) and running on the winning 4x400m relay. Courtney Lemmons also had a great meet the 100m dash (13.70), long jump (14'08.50) and running the anchor on the 1st place 4x100m relay. Other Lady Titan winners were Michelle Thurgood, pole vault (7'00, tying the senior class record), Cheyna Field, 400m dash (1:05.40), Katrina Dunlap, 800m run (2:33.7) and Erin Kibler, 3200m run (12:53.0).

The boys were even more dominant winning 16 of the 17 events. Matt Dunston was the only double individual winner as he captured the 200m dash (23.96) and 400m dash (53.73). Zach Watson cleared 14'00 to win the pole vault while Koa Mo’o won the high jump at 6'02. This is the #2 mark ever at Syracuse in only his 2nd track meet. Titans won all three throwing events with Spencer Hull winning the shot put (42'10), Brad Sherman the discus (133'03) and Shane Russell the javelin (134'04). Jaxon Worthen won the 110m hurdles (16.25) and Mike Russell the 300m hurdles (43.94). This was Mike’s first attempt at the event- he made it a good one. Kavika Fonua’s 11.60 into a big head wind won the 100m dash over teammate Jake Garver. Landon Greenhalgh moved into the #5 spot on the all-time list with his 2:02.14 in the 800m run. Tom Hill and Cody Kelley captured the top two spots in the distance races with Tom winning the 1600m run (5:02.0) and Cody the 3200m run (11:04.3). In the highlight event of the meet, two 4x400m teams finished ahead of the two-man 1600m relay team of Jaxon Hansen and Brandon Yardley. Great effort by all eight relays in the final event.
Overall the meet was a good one with 19 marks making the all-time top ten list and four classes records set. But the competition will definitely get tougher as the season progresses.

Titan Track Bulletin - March 18, 2012

HEY, YOU’RE YOUNG- JUST DO IT!!
Good quote from the movie “Amazing Grace”: “We’re too young to realize certain things are impossible. Which is why we will do them anyway.” Too often we old timers plant limitations into your heads. Fortunately, you are young enough to realize that the “impossible” challenges are just that, challenges. Aim High. Do the “impossible” anyway!!

COPPER HILLS DUAL
There were two school records and one general record set when the Titans traveled to Copper Hills. Sarah Sperry cleared 5'01" for a new records in the high jump, and Zach Watson broke his own record in the pole vault with a 14'06" clearance. Definitely the outstanding performances of the meet. The general record: longest dual meet ever. It was a good thing Hillcrest didn’t show up- we’d still be there.
The Girls came up short in the TEAM scores as Copper Hills scored 81 to the Lady Titans 58. Capturing individual 1st place finishes were: Jaylen Hernandez and Mallory Ashby in the pole vault (7'00, a new sophomore record for Mallory), Lindsey Bailey, 800m run (2:36.7), Sharlie Dimick, 1600m run (5:49.4). Sam Segura, Jordan Anderson, Mallory Ashby and Cheyna Field won the medley relay and Lindsey Bailey, Cheyna Field, Sharlie Dimick and Shelby Cadwell won the 4x400m relay.
The Boys dominated Copper Hills winning by a score of 81 to 51. Besides Watson’s win in the pole vault, 1st place finishes in individual events went to: Spencer Hull, shot put (46'10"), Brad Sherman, discus (123'08"), Matt Dunston, 400m dash (53.5), Mike Russell, 800m run (2:07.1), Brandon Yardley, 1600m run (4:38.6) and Jaxon Hansen, 3200m run (10:23.9). Watson, Jake Zaugg, Will Haddick and Landon Greenhalgh won the medley relay in 3:51.9. And 12 Titans ran very close together to sweep the top three spots in the 4x400m relay. All three TEAMS were timed between 3:39.2 and 3:41.2. How impressive is this? 12 Titans averaged 55-seconds for their legs. VERY impressive. Sorry, I’m not sure who was on which TEAM.
Although the meet went very long, it was very encouraging to see so many PR’s and several marks that made our All-Time Top Ten list. This list can be viewed in a previous post.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were: Sarah Sperry and Zach Watson. It’s hard to overlook school records.

Hannah Williams ran 4:40.80 to place 4th out of 27 runners at the Willie Williams Invitational in Arizona. Lindsey McFarland ran 2:18.54 to place 3rd in her heat of the 800m run at San Diego State. She also ran a leg on Weber’s 4x400m relay. Most of the meet was rained out- SUU’s Mayra Franco and Hunter Naisbitt were unable to compete. Jake Rossmango, running for TCU, ran 4:07.30 in the 1500m run to place 4th and 9:05.37 to place 10th at the TCU Invitational. Great job by Jake.

Titan Track Update - March 11, 2012

BREAKING NEWS - Many of you know of and are friends with Brad Nye, of Davis. He just won the New Balance National Indoor Mile Run in New York City. His time was 4:08.67!! I think it's the first time anyone from Utah has won an event at the meet.

WHAT A GREAT WEEK!!!
Hey, we even had a couple days of good weather!! There were many other things that happened this week that make the coaches excited about the season. We are getting more kids involved and hopefully, will keep everyone going for the rest of the year. The Parent/Athlete Night was great. The Intrasquad meet gave everyone a starting point. And, the Saturday morning workout was a good one- great weather and a chance for many of you got get some individual help from Coaches Wilcox, Cannon, Day and Murray.

PARENT/ATHLETE NIGHT
Thanks to all who attended. I think it was very worthwhile. James Parker was outstanding. His presentation definitely had me fired up, ready to try and do a better job of coaching. I hope he had the same impact on you as a student/athlete.

INTRASQUAD MEET
Great weather, great meet. It was fun to watch so many “newbies” have their first exposure to the sport. It was also great to see some excitement and competitiveness with the “Syracuse” TEAM emerging victorious over the "Titans". On the Girls side, some of the highlights were: Jaydin Hurst winning both hurdles and placing in the 100 and 200 dashes; Rachelle Holden winning both jumps; Nicole Lavely winning the javelin and discus; Erin Kibler winning the 800 and 3200 and finishing 2nd in the 1600; Courtney Lemmons winning the 100 and finishing 2nd in the long jump in her first track meet; Sarah Sperry winning the shot put then running off to play in the All-Star Basketball game; Shelby Cadwell winning the 200 and running on the winning 8x400; Lindsey Bailey winning the 400 and placing 2nd in the 200; and Maddy Neyts running all three distance races and PRing in two of them.
Boys highlights: Zach Watson breaking his own school record in the pole vault clearing 14'01" as well as placing 2nd in the 200; Brandon Yardley running everything winning the 200, 400 and 800; Jaxon Hansen winning the 800 and finishing 2nd in the 1600; Jaxon Worthen winning the high jump and 110 hurdles; Bradley Sherman winning the discus and javelin; Spencer Hull winning the shot put and placing in the discus and javelin; Mike Russell winning the long jump and placing in the 800 and 1600; Ashton Bigelow winning the 300 hurdles and placing in the 110's; Kavika Fonua winning the 100 and placing in the shot put and high jump. Favorite event: the coed 4x800m relay. It was close to the end with all competitors giving 100% to help their TEAM.
There were many more highlights- and many more highlights to come over the next 10 weeks.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the first Athletes of the Week for the outdoor season were: Erin Kibler and Brandon Yardley. Between the two of them, they competed in about eight or nine events. I think they were two tired athletes Friday night.

TITANS / HILLCREST @ COPPER HILLS
This will be a good meet to see how we compete against some other schools. Copper Hills has one of the top programs in the state. Both boys and girls finished 4th last year. It will be a good test. Everyone who has completed all of their paperwork will compete. The bus will leave at 1:00. You will be excused 8th period.

DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
We will host the Davis District Championships March 27th and 28th. We want to use this as a fundraiser. We are asking you to find a business or individual who would like to sponsor and event for the meet. I’ve attached the forms that include all of the information. Please help out if you can.

Titan Track Bulletin - March 4, 2012

“THE WILL TO WIN means nothing without the WILL TO PREPARE!!!” The will to win and improve is very common in athletes of all abilities. The necessary will to prepare is not as common. This preparation covers many aspects: completing the scheduled workouts, “pre-hab”, nutrition, grades, self-discipline, etc.. Let’s work hard in ALL areas of preparation that will help make you a better student/athlete and the Titans a better TEAM!

WEEK ONE A GOOD ONE
Even though the weather wasn’t too cooperative, we were still able to get a great deal accomplished with some improvised workouts. We had some very good conditioning workouts. Great job by most of you in taking every opportunity to make yourself a better track and field athlete. KEEP IT UP!! Hopefully, this week we will be able to include more technical training into our workouts while continuing to improve your overall fitness level.

WORKOUTS THIS WEEK
Monday will be a big day of various athletic challenges. Events will show your speed endurance, strength endurance, explosiveness, strength, etc. It will be a fun, competitive day.
WE WILL WORK OUT TUESDAY AT 1:00 PM. Because of ACT testing, Tuesday will not be a regular school day. However, we will still have a regular workout. We will also have practice Saturday at 9:00 am.

PARENT / ATHLETE NIGHT
Reminder: This will be held Thursday evening at 6:30 in the Auditorium. James Parker, a 9-time All-American and 2004 U.S. Olympian will be our guest speaker. EVERYONE should attend.

INTRASQUAD MEET
We will announce the TEAMS for the Intrasquad meet Tuesday. The meet will be held Friday.

UNIFORMS
The plan now is to hand out uniforms Saturday morning after a short practice. You must have all physicals and paperwork turned in, fees paid, and “U’s” cleared to receive a uniform. More information will be covered throughout the week.

ALUMNI UPDATE
Most colleges are taking a couple weeks off from any competition. However, SUU got their outdoor season underway at UNLV. Hunter Naisbitt won the discus (143'10) and placed 4th in both the shot put (45'06) and hammer (134'06). Sasha Russell ran 13.28 in the 100m dash.
