Titan Track Bulletin - April 28, 2013

FREMONT DUAL
Good weather (finally) resulted in some good marks at Fremont Wednesday. The Boys won the meet by a score of 100 to 33. The Lady Titans fell to Fremont 53-79.

In the top performance for the Girls, Jaycie Smith won the high jump clearing 5'01 to tie the school record. Brenn Flint picked up a victory in the discus with a throw of 105'06. Sharlie Dimick won the 800 in 2:26.55, the #3 mark in Titan history.

On the Boys side, Jaxon Worthen won the 110m hurdles in 15.06. Jake Garver’s 41.96 was fast enough to win the 300m hurdles. Titans swept the sprints as Gus Salazar won the 100m dash (11.43), Kavika Fonua the 200m dash (23.53) and Landon Greenhalgh the 400m dash (53.22). Parker Greenhalgh picked up a win in the 800m run (2:06.5) and Tom Hill won the 1600m run (4:58.53). Mason Leishman cleared 5'10 to win the high jump and Austin Evans’ 19'03 won the long jump. Titans also swept the throws with Caden Call winning the shot put (42'08), Mason Woodward the javelin (155'09) and Nick Merriman the discus (143'10). Besides the wins, there were dozens of PR’s and improvements on the Region Rankings list.

DAVIS INVITATIONAL
This meet annually produces many of the top performances in the state with most of the top athletes competing. With over 50 schools there, and near perfect weather, this year was no different. The meet uses a different format with the top performers competing in the afternoon. The morning (Open) session also consists of the state’s top athletes. The Titans had some great performances as shown by three school records being set.

Placers in the Open Session included:
Weston Flynn- 3rd in the javelin, 151'06;
Brock Anderson- 4th in the javelin, 148'11;
Karson Nielson- 3rd in the 110m hurdles, 15.62;
Jake Garver- 4th in the 100m dash, 11.22 (state qualifying mark);
Landon Greenhalgh- 1st in the 1600m run, 4:25.97 (missing state qualifying by .1 second, #5 all-time mark);
Parker Greenhalgh- 8th in the 1600m run, 4:31.46, #7 all-time;
Ashton Bigelow- 5th in the 300m hurdles, 41.34, #6 all-time;
Tom Hill- 6th in the 3200m run, 10:07.38, #4 all-time;

Isabella Williams- 4th in the 3200m run, 11:58.40;
and Logan Harker, Sam Segura, Lindsey Bailey and Adriana McFarland- 4th in the medley relay, 4:36.21.

The Invited Session saw some great performances and four school records. Ali Morris (9'06) and Mallory Ashby (8'06) placed 3rd and 5th in the pole vault. Ali’s mark was a school record and Mallory’s the #3 mark. Brenn Flint’s throw of 109'06 was 3rd in the discus, a state qualifying mark and #2 on the all-time list.
Jaxon Worthen got things started for the Boys by winning the 110m hurdles in 14.62, a school record and the #3 mark in Utah (#1 in 5A) this season. Kavika Fonua followed by running 11.08 to place 6th in the 100m dash. That is the #2 mark in Titan history and #4 in 5A. Kavika, Jake Garver, Gus Salazar and Daunte Atkinson ran 42.33 to place 3rd in the 4x100m relay. It was a school record by nearly .8 seconds. It was possibly the best 4x100 race ever run in Utah with the top five places also the five fastest times run in Utah this year. Worthen (39.63) and Garver 41.49) finished 3rd and 6th in the 300m hurdles. And Mason Woodward capped off the record assault by throwing 178'02 to finish 3rd in the javelin. That is the #2 5A mark in Utah. It was an incredible day for the Titans.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected this week were Lauren Garrett, Sam Segura, Gus Salazar, Cameron Dower and Ashton Bigelow. Lauren finished up a busy day at Davis with a big PR split in the 4x800m relay. Sam does a great job EVERYDAY- a hard worker, good leader and ready to jump in wherever needed. Gus had big PR’s in the 100 and ran a great leg in the record-setting 4x100m relay. Cameron is one of the top Titans when it comes to doing everything possible to become a better athlete and help the TEAM. And Ashton had a good PR in the 300m hurdles and jumped in at the last second to run a good anchor on the 4x100m relay in the morning session at Davis.

LAYTON DUAL

This meet is at our place Wednesday. It will be the last chance for many of you to move up in the Region Rankings. More info Monday.

HERRIMAN TWILIGHT INVITATIONAL

The bus will leave at 1:30 Saturday and the meet begins at 4:00. It is important that you let me know if you can’t compete at the meet. There are some restrictions for entries that I’ll go over Monday, but we will be able to enter about three-times the number of athletes than if we were going to BYU. Much of this meet will be run under the lights. It should be a fun meet and help us prepared for Region and State.

Titan Track Bulletin - April 21, 2013

CONGRATS TO OUR COACHES
Coaches Busby  and Wilcox ran tough at the Boston Marathon. Of course their performances will take a back seat to the other events surrounding the classic event. Coach Wilcox finished in 3:18. Coach Busby- well, she didn’t finish as the bombs exploded when she was just .3 miles from the finish. It’s great that they and their "support staff" emerged safe and sound.

MEET UPDATES
The same Titans are usually featured in the meet updates. This week the highlights will focus on those who may not be at the top of the list. In summarizing the TEAM results, in our dual meet with Weber, the Boys won by a score of 79-51 while the Girls fell to the Warriors 45-76.

At the Wildcat Invitational at Woods Cross, the Boys finished 3rd and the Girls 6th, just 7 points out of 3rd. Among the noteworthy performances, Sharlie Dimick (5:15.26) and Isabella Williams (5:17.26) qualified for State in the 1600 running the #2 and #3 times ever in Titan history. The only other Lady Titan to ever qualify in that event was Hannah Williams. The medley relay of Gus Salazar, Jace Skidmore, Will Haddick and Landon Greenhalgh also qualified for State in placing first. All results for the Wildcat Invitational can be found at: http://results.runnercard.com/Results/results.jsp?meetid=4723

BIG IMPROVEMENTS
There are many huge improvements and efforts that usually don’t score points, but nevertheless play a huge role in helping us become a better TEAM. I decided to focus on some of these athletes this week. Madie Elwood’s 1600m time has dropped from 7:45 to 6:30 in just one month. Renee Peterson has had an improvement of 25-seconds in the same event. Aubrie and Becca Jacobsen, Rachel Markham, Kayla Berryman and Jessica Howes have also been making big improvements in the distance events. Shanna Thomas keeps moving up the lists in all three throwing events. Maranda Kirkman and Kelli Lowry have improved over 15' in the discus since the early meets.
In some impressive improvements for the Boys, Brady Cook, Tyler Fessler, Brayden Burrell, Brandon Read and Lane Dunstan have made huge improvements in the distance events. Trace Hicken, Stephan Olivas, Alex Harris, Aamon Riley and Danielson Alofipo continue to PR on a consistent basis in the throwing events. In the sprints, Trevor Olsen, Loren Burrell, Carrick White and Trent Hughes are dropping their PR’s each meet.
All of these Titans work hard and don’t get much publicity for their efforts. There are many others not mentioned. We are a better TEAM because of their commitment.

STRONG IS THE NEW BEAUTIFUL RACE
Coach Busby
put together a very successful race as part of her Miss Utah platform. Parker Greenhalgh won the 5k race in 17:56. He was followed by closely by Carson and Ryan Andreason. Erin Kibler won the Women’s race in 22:07. Rachel Markham and Bella Williams were the next top finishers. Spencer Woodhall won the Clydesdale division. Thanks from Haley to all who ran and helped at the race. Over $800 was raised for the Children’s Miracle Network.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected this week were Sharlie Dimick and Isabella Williams for their State Qualifying marks in the 1600m run, as well as their quality relay splits. Also selected were Parker Greenhalgh and Tom Hill (big PR’s in the 1600 and 3200m runs) Caden Call (#9 all-time mark in the shot put) and Karson Nielson (huge PR in the 300m hurdles).

Mason Woodward turned in the performance of the meet with a 17' PR in the javelin throwing 175'06" to win the event. That is a school record and easily a state qualifying mark.
