Titan Indoor Track Update Feb 1, 2015
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"If you do what you always did, you will get what you always got." Anonymous
Not getting the results you want? Maybe you need to change what you are doing. Usually it’s not the big things you need to change, but the little things that will add up to big improvements.
UTAH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
In the only scoring meet of the indoor season, the Titans demonstrated they could compete against the best at the Olympic Ice Oval Friday and Saturday. With over 60 schools and clubs from Utah and Wyoming competing, the Boys tied for 2nd with Bingham and Desert Hills, finishing behind Davis. The Lady Titans finished 3rd behind Herriman and Davis. Scoring was quite an accomplishment as there were as many as 300 athletes in some of the events.
Cidnee Davies had an incredible meet (while showing off her new smile) to lead the Lady Titans. She had a "Beamonesque" (look it up- you may win a shirt) leap of 18'02.50 to win the long jump. That was not only a school record, but the #6 mark in Utah history. She needed the big effort as Jentry Skidmore had jumped 17'01.50 to hold the record for a few minutes. She tied for 2nd and moved into the top-25 on the Utah all-time list. Cidnee came back Saturday to win the 60m hurdles in another school record time of 9.29, the #16 mark in Utah history. And in only her 3rd "real" hurdle race, Jentry ran 9.74 (#4 on the Titan all-time list) to place 6th. She then finished off a great meet by running a school record time of 26.83 to place 8th in the 200m dash. After a week in bed, Kayla Rees ran tough to finish 3rd in the 60m dash in 7.94. The two girls ahead of her were the 4A and 5A 100m champions last year. Isabella Williams left the basketball court long enough to place 3rd in the 800m run. Her time of 2:19.77 was a school record and placed her in the top-30 on the Utah all-time list. Brenn Flint struggled with a poor surface, but still placed 5th in the shot put with a toss of 36'11.
There were some great performances by many Lady Titans that just missed scoring. Rachel Griffin had a huge meet running 5:36.45 (#5 all-time) in the 1600m and 12:27.20 (#4 all-time) in the 3200m. Abbey Greenhalgh, Renee Peterson, Amber Mecham, Liz Wood, Monica Hill, Gabby Young, Sydney Hansen, Kayla Snyder, Ashley Walker, and Adriana Barcinas all had big indoor PR’s in their distance events. Sprinters/hurdlers Brooklyn Dee, Hailee Swank, Kelsie Taylor, and Arlyne Arteaga also significantly improved their times.
On the Boys side, Colten Yardley ran 8.63 (#3 all-time) to place 4th in the 60m hurdles. Jacob Wakefield (9.18) and Tanner Kutterer (9.22) ran great races, just missing the 12-man final. Wakefield jumped 38'02 on his final attempt in the triple jump to place 2nd and move into the #3 spot on the all-time list. Ammon Riley had a big indoor PR of 45'05.50 in the shot put to place 5th. Instead of complaining about the crappy throwing surface, he changed his technique to pull off the great throw in the finals. Bryant Edgerton had a big meet running 10:05.75 (#3 all-time) in the 3200m, and 4:35.00 (#6 all-time) in the 1600m. Both were the best marks ever for a Titan sophomore. Hunter Woodhall just missed scoring in the 400m dash with his time of 51.78. That is the #2 all-time mark and fastest ever run by a Titan sophomore. Carson Andreasen (2:03.85) and Loren Burrell (2:04.80) had big indoor seasonal bests in the 800m run. Carson, Loren, Bryant and Ryan Andreasen ran good splits to finish 7th in the 4x800m relay in 8:39.05. Broderic Hall just missed making the 60m finals with his time of 7.41. A fun race to watch was the 3200m run as Zack Burrell (10:53.34) and Will Cannon (10:54.22) battled for the win in their heat. Both times were big PR’s. In the final race of the day, the Andreasen’s, Loren Burrell and Hunter Woodhall battled the entire way to finish 2nd in the 4x400m relay in 3:32.22. This moved the Titans into the tie for 2nd place in the TEAM race.
Treston Cullimore, Taylor Riding, Tyler Fessler, Justin Cobabe, Jessop Oliver, Ashton Durbin, and Thomas Griffin also had some seasonal PR’s in their events.
It was a long two-days (how about 83-heats of the 200m dash) , but a "good long". Thanks to all who supported in so many ways. Thanks to Coach Wilcox, Kevin Hansen, and all the parents who put in the long hours and gave up their weekends to help our efforts. And thanks to all who endured to the end, moving hurdles, supporting their teammates, and doing the little things to help the program.
The meet showed that the Titans have the potential to be very competitive on a state level this year in Outdoor Track and Field. How competitive? That will depend on working hard, training correctly, staying healthy, and being committed to becoming the best athlete and teammate possible. Let’s all aim high!!
