Titan Track Bulletin - March 16, 2014

TITANS START SEASON STRONG
    The 2014 Outdoor season got off to a great start against Copper Hills.  The Lady Titans won by a score of 87 to 45 while the Boys scored 92 points to the Grizzlies 49.
    The Lady Titans picked up victories in 14 of the 17 events.  The following Girls won their individual events:
Cidnee Davies- high jump (5'02, tying her own school record), long jump (16'08", an outdoor school record) and 100m hurdles (15.57, #2 all-time);
Brenn Flint- shot put (35'02"), discus (107'11") and javelin (80'03");
Mallory Ashby- pole vault (7'00");
Suzy Robertson- 300m hurdles (49.97);
Jentry Skidmore- 100m dash (12.98, #2 all-time);
Sharlie Dimick- 800m run (2:31.0);
Bella Williams- 1600m run (5:17.5);
and Maddy Neyts- 3200m run (13:04.6, #7 all-time).
    Besides the winning performances, the following marks made the Titan All-Time list:
Skidmore- long jump (16'05", #4); Robertson- 100m hurdles (15.59, #3) and high jump (5'00", #4); and Emily Frei- javelin (69'00", #10).
    The Boys were equally dominant as they were victorious in 12 of the 17 events.  First place finishes came from the following:
Nick Merriman- pole vault (11'06") and discus (144'03");
Caden Call- shot put (48'07.50, #6 all-time);
Mason Leishman- javelin (144'09", #8 all-time);
Karson Nielson- 110m hurdles (15.28, #3 all-time) and 300m hurdles (41.31, #6 all-time);
Daunte Atkinson- 100m dash (11.14, #3 all-time);
Hunter Woodhall- 400m dash (54.26);
Ryan Andreasen- 800m run (2:06.7);
Atkinson, Kavika Fonua, Diante Lora and Mace Kucej- 4x100m relay (43.42); and
Nielsen, Atkinson, Woodhall and Colten Yardley- 4x400m relay (3:36.3).
    Others performances making the Titan All-Time list included:
Atkinson- high jump (5'08", #9); Spencer Woodhall- discus (134'01", #5); Yardley- 110m hurdles (15.85, #7) and 100m dash (11.42, #6); Kucej- 100m dash (11.64, #10); Merriman- 110m hurdles (16.38, #9); and Ryan Andreasen- 1600m run (4:42.74, #10).
    These were the obvious top results.  Besides the obvious, there were many more PR’s that were just as significant.  What the TEAM needs is everyone attempting to improve a little each and every practice as well as every meet.  It is unrealistic to think you can PR every meet, but it is definitely possible to feel you are better prepared to compete every meet.  This feeling will come based on how you approach all phases of your training.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
    Chosen as the Girls’ A of W was Cidnee Davies.  It’s hard to argue with two School Records and a #2 performance.  Karson Nielson was selected for the Boys.  Again, two all-time marks in an early meet is a great performance.

FRIDAY’S WORKOUT
    The workout Friday was our best of the year.  In the long run, it will help us more than the meet with Copper Hills.  Running five 200's, or 3200m of repeats, or the med ball relays would be tough workouts if done individually.  What made them more difficult, and more productive, was the extra effort and intensity everyone put into their individual leg so they wouldn’t let down their TEAM.  Hopefully, we will feel that same obligation all season with every workout and every competition.  Don’t do anything to let down your TEAM!!

NORTHRIDGE/FREMON/LAYTON/VIEWMONT
    We will host this quad-meet Wednesday with action beginning at 2:00 pm.  The order of events will be the same as last week, but the times will be moved ahead one hour.  With only Weber and Davis missing, this will be a good early indicator of how we stack up against the rest of Region One.

INCREDIBLE “ALUMNI” ACTION
    There was no real alumni action this week.  However, Jared Ward, our “honorary alum”, earned his 5th and 6th All-American honors. Competing for BYU, he placed 4th in both the 3000m and 5000m runs at the NCAA Indoor, Championships this weekend.  Not bad considering that as a high school sophomore, he was about the #12 runner on his cross country team.  Jared’s time of 13:54 in the 5000 would convert to a 13:32 at sea level.  An amazing performance by one of the most amazing athletes I’ve had the privilege of coaching.  Jared’s a great athlete, but a much greater person.

DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
    Only 10 days until we host the Davis District Championships.  We want to show the entire District that the Titans can put on a first class event.  All members of the TEAM will be called upon to prepare, set up, officiate, etc., as well as compete and challenge for the team titles.  There is a lot of work to do to get ready for the meet- please be willing to help out wherever you can.
    We are still in need of sponsors for several events.  If you can help out or know someone who can, let me know ASAP.  I sent out the information last week.  But if you need the details and sponsorship forms, let me know and I will resend them.  Thanks in advance for your support.
