Titan Indoor Track Update Feb 22, 2015

SIMPLOT GAMES
With over 2000 athletes from four countries and 20 states participating, the competition in Idaho was tough to say the least. And this brought out the best in the Titans. In what sounds like a broken record (I forgot- none of you know what a "record" is), the Lady Titans continued their assault on the Indoor Record board as four new marks were set.
Cidnee Davies ran an incredible 8.86 in the 60m hurdle final to finish in 8th place. This was not only a school record, but the fastest time ever run indoors by a Utah high school athlete. The seven girls in front of her were from California and North Carolina. Cidnee was also the top Utah finisher in the long jump placing 10th with a 17'06" mark. Isabella Williams ran a great 1600m run to finish 8th in a school record time of 5:09.04. This moves her into the top-25 on the Utah All-Time list. Brenn Flint threw 38'07.50 in the weight throw for a new indoor record. This put her in 13th place. She also threw 39'01.50 to place 9th in the shot put. The final school record for the Lady Titans came in the medley relay. Kayla Rees led off with a great 58.4 400m leg to put us in the lead. That time would have placed her in the top-8 in the open 400. Big 200 splits by Arlyne Arteaga (27.5) and Jentry Skidmore (26.1) kept up the record pace. And then Rachel Griffin ran a 2:29.9 anchor leg for the 800, a PR by over 10-seconds, to secure the record in 4:22.43. She probably set a PR in the 200 as she went out in 32 seconds and battled every challenge the entire way. It was a great race to watch as all four ran the very best race possible.
The Boys waited until the very last race of the indoor season to set their first school record. Colten Yardley ran 8.29 in the 60m hurdles to finish in a tie for 6th place. This was a new school record and also the fastest time by a Utah athlete this year. It is the #12 mark in Utah indoor history.
There were many impressive performances that didn’t make finals, but were still great efforts. Jentry Skidmore had a couple jumps within an inch of the qualifying mark of 16'09 in the long jump. Ammon Riley had two throws about 2" from making the final cut-off mark of 46' in the shot put. Jake Wakefield probably eclipsed the school record in the triple jump, but the effort wasn’t measured due to the big minimum mark. Tanner Kutterer ran a PR 9.07 in the 60m hurdles. That was the 5th fastest time by a sophomore in the event. Justin Cobabe’s diving handoff was a highlight, even though it won’t be used for an instructional video.
And last but certainly not least, great job by Coach Wilcox who turned in a very good 5:25.75 in the coaches 1600m run.
Complete results of the meet can be found at:
http://simplotgames.com/records-results/
Thanks to everyone who helped make the great weekend possible, especially our "shuttle" service. The Andreasen’s, Jacobs, Yardley’s, Young’s, Burrell’s, Mr. Skidmore, Mr. Wood, and Mr. Rees made huge sacrifices to make the trip possible. Coach Wilcox was his usual support videoing, taking splits, and getting athletes ready to perform.
The performances of the meet could go to Kevin Hansen and Stephen Riley for spending the entire duration of the meet taking some great pictures.
They can be found at:
http://kevinhansen.smugmug.com/Track-Field and https://facebook.com/2015titantrackandfield
And thanks to the entire TEAM for making this a great weekend. Everyone did a great job in following the rules and guidelines set up by the coaches. Perhaps someday I’ll reveal the real story behind the "calls from the front desk".

DISAPPOINTED or DISCOURAGED?
Being disappointed in a performance can help you work harder, train more intelligently, and take the necessary steps to improve. When an athlete feels discouraged, they have a tendency to lower or discard their goals, shirk or skip workouts, look for excuses for sub-par performances, etc. If you did not reach some of your goals you may have set for Indoor, let’s take the positive steps towards pursuing them during Outdoor. Disappointment can be good- feeling discouraged never helps.

Titan Indoor Track Update Feb 15, 2015

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day-in and day-out." - Robert Collier
Don't neglect the "little" things.

DISTANCE CHALLENGE
Two indoor records fell, one addition to the all-time list was added, and several PR’s established at the Olympic Oval Friday. It was another good performance by the Titans.
As has been the case this year, the Lady Titans continued shattering indoor records. Of the 15 individual events contested indoors, the Girls have set new records in 10 of them. And a couple more are likely to fall at Simplot. Kayla Rees ran a great 400m dash, especially considering she is recovering from mono. Her time of 58.54 was good enough for 2nd place and a new record.  The mark also makes the Utah All-Time Indoor list.  Isabella Williams won the 3200m run in 11:30.95, also a school indoor record.  She has now replaced her sister, Hannah, as the record-holder in two events.  Hannah still holds the 1600m run record.  Abbey Greenhalgh (5:56.12) and Renee Peterson (5:59.42) dipped under the six-minute barrier for the first time in the 1600m run. Sydney Hansen and Julie Farrell also had PR’s. Arlyne Arteaga and Amber Mecham had big indoor PR’s in the 400m dash.
Colten Yardley had the top performance for the Boys. His 51.00 in the 400m dash was good enough for 4th place and the #2 spot on our indoor list. He trails only his brother, Tyrell, in the event. Loren Burrell (52.99) and Treston Cullimore (54.41) also had a big indoor PR’s. Tyler Fessler had a big improvement running 4:50.52 in the 1600m run. He then came back a little later to run 5:05 in the same event. Crazy kid. Zack Burrell had a couple PR’s in the 800 and 3200m runs. And Ashton Durbin, Coby Jacob and Colby Robb had PR’s in the 800m run.

SIMPLOT GAMES

Reminder that the meeting for everyone going to Simplot will be held after school Tuesday. Bring your signed waivers as well as the money. The final schedule, ride and rooming assignments, etc., will be handed out at that time.

OUTDOOR TRACK MEETING
The Girls meeting for Outdoor will be held Tuesday, Feb 24th. The Boys will be Wednesday, Feb 25th. Both meetings will be held in the "Blue Room" and will start at 2:30. Look for the fliers throughout the school. If you bring a list of names of all of the people in the fliers to the meeting, your name will be put in a drawing for $25. Help spread the word about the meeting. It would be great to have the biggest TEAM in Titan history this year.

ALUMNI ACTION
Mayra Franco continues running well and ran 7.77 in the 60m dash and 25.53 in the 200m dash at the New Mexico Invitational.  That was the only result I could find.

Titan Indoor Track Update Feb 8, 2015

QUOTE OF THE WEEK"Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great." John D. Rockefeller
Aim high. Don’t be timid. Take a chance.

BOISE NEW BALANCE INVITATIONAL
Every Titan who made the trip to Boise returned with at least one seasonal best performance in their event(s). Three indoor school records were also established in the process. The competition was tough as there were athletes from nine states competing, and three marks were set that ranked #1 in the U.S.

Brenn Flint had a huge meet as she threw 40'05.50 to win the shot put. (That qualifies as a "Beamonesque" throw, right Brooklyn?) It is a school record and the #15 mark in Utah indoor history. She also captured the weight throw with a toss of 34'08. Cidnee Davies also broke her own school record with a 9.17 in the 60m hurdle trials. That is the #10 mark in Utah indoor history. She came back with a 9.22 in the finals to place 4th. Cid also finished 4th in the long jump with a leap of 17'08. Kayla Rees set the 3rd school record with her time of 26.05 in the 200m dash. That was good enough for 7th place in the event (won in a nation-leading 23.39 time) and also rates as the #12 mark by a Utah athlete on a 200m track. She also placed 8th in the 60m dash with a time of 7.95.
Jentry Skidmore moved into the #2 position on the Titan all-time list in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.47. That also ranks as the #23 mark in Utah history. Not bad a rookie hurdler. And speaking of rookie hurdlers, Anne Petersen’s 9.87 in her first hurdle race ranks as the #5 all-time Titan mark. Her 28.23 in the 200m dash is the #4 mark run on a 200m track. Now, if Anne can just learn the meaning of the word confidence!
Carson Andreasen had a big seasonal best running 4:46.96 for the 1600m. His 400 time was wiped out with a lane violation. Ryan Andreasen also had a seasonal best with his 2:05.97 in the 800m run. Tanner Kutterer ran a PR 9.21 in the 60m hurdle trials to reach the finals. He was just off that mark on the second day, but still finished 11th. I believe that was the fastest time for a sophomore in the event.
Complete results of the meet can be found at:
http://www.boiseindoor.com/

ALUMNI ACTION
Tyrell Yardley ran 47.03 to win the 400m dash at the New Mexico Inv. This is the #5 mark in BYU indoor history. The hard work and perseverance is paying off. Suzy Robertson ran 1:01.46 in the 400 and 9.49 in the 60m hurdles at the Air Force Inv in Colorado. And Ali Morris had a big clearance over 11'06 in the pole vault in Boise. It was great to witness her big PR.

HOPE RUN
Plan on running/walking the Hope Run Monday at 4:00. You can register Monday during lunch or from 3:00 - 4:00 before the run. The $5.00 entry will get you a beanie, cocoa and cookies. It would be a good "warmdown" following a moderate workout.

UTAH DISTANCE CHALLENGE
This meet will take place Friday, Feb 13th at the Olympic Oval in Kearns. The cost is $5.00- no limit on events. There is no cost for spectators. There will be no bus- you will have to arrange your own rides. This can be a good tune up for Simplot and a fast track for PR’s.

The time and order of events is as follows (Girls first):
4:00 - Track open for Warmup
5:00 - 1600m Run
7:00 - 400m Dash
7:45 - 800m Run
8:20 - 3200m Run

 WORKOUTS THIS WEEK

Plan on all workouts continuing to be held outside this week.  But continue to meet in room 2118 after school each day.

Titan Indoor Track Update Feb 1, 2015

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"If you do what you always did, you will get what you always got." Anonymous

Not getting the results you want? Maybe you need to change what you are doing. Usually it’s not the big things you need to change, but the little things that will add up to big improvements.

UTAH INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS
In the only scoring meet of the indoor season, the Titans demonstrated they could compete against the best at the Olympic Ice Oval Friday and Saturday. With over 60 schools and clubs from Utah and Wyoming competing, the Boys tied for 2nd with Bingham and Desert Hills, finishing behind Davis. The Lady Titans finished 3rd behind Herriman and Davis. Scoring was quite an accomplishment as there were as many as 300 athletes in some of the events.

Cidnee Davies had an incredible meet (while showing off her new smile) to lead the Lady Titans. She had a "Beamonesque" (look it up- you may win a shirt) leap of 18'02.50 to win the long jump. That was not only a school record, but the #6 mark in Utah history. She needed the big effort as Jentry Skidmore had jumped 17'01.50 to hold the record for a few minutes. She tied for 2nd and moved into the top-25 on the Utah all-time list. Cidnee came back Saturday to win the 60m hurdles in another school record time of 9.29, the #16 mark in Utah history. And in only her 3rd "real" hurdle race, Jentry ran 9.74 (#4 on the Titan all-time list) to place 6th. She then finished off a great meet by running a school record time of 26.83 to place 8th in the 200m dash. After a week in bed, Kayla Rees ran tough to finish 3rd in the 60m dash in 7.94. The two girls ahead of her were the 4A and 5A 100m champions last year. Isabella Williams left the basketball court long enough to place 3rd in the 800m run. Her time of 2:19.77 was a school record and placed her in the top-30 on the Utah all-time list. Brenn Flint struggled with a poor surface, but still placed 5th in the shot put with a toss of 36'11.
There were some great performances by many Lady Titans that just missed scoring. Rachel Griffin had a huge meet running 5:36.45 (#5 all-time) in the 1600m and 12:27.20 (#4 all-time) in the 3200m. Abbey Greenhalgh, Renee Peterson, Amber Mecham, Liz Wood, Monica Hill, Gabby Young, Sydney Hansen, Kayla Snyder, Ashley Walker, and Adriana Barcinas all had big indoor PR’s in their distance events. Sprinters/hurdlers Brooklyn Dee, Hailee Swank, Kelsie Taylor, and Arlyne Arteaga also significantly improved their times.
On the Boys side, Colten Yardley ran 8.63 (#3 all-time) to place 4th in the 60m hurdles. Jacob Wakefield (9.18) and Tanner Kutterer (9.22) ran great races, just missing the 12-man final. Wakefield jumped 38'02 on his final attempt in the triple jump to place 2nd and move into the #3 spot on the all-time list. Ammon Riley had a big indoor PR of 45'05.50 in the shot put to place 5th. Instead of complaining about the crappy throwing surface, he changed his technique to pull off the great throw in the finals. Bryant Edgerton had a big meet running 10:05.75 (#3 all-time) in the 3200m, and 4:35.00 (#6 all-time) in the 1600m. Both were the best marks ever for a Titan sophomore. Hunter Woodhall just missed scoring in the 400m dash with his time of 51.78. That is the #2 all-time mark and fastest ever run by a Titan sophomore. Carson Andreasen (2:03.85) and Loren Burrell (2:04.80) had big indoor seasonal bests in the 800m run. Carson, Loren, Bryant and Ryan Andreasen ran good splits to finish 7th in the 4x800m relay in 8:39.05. Broderic Hall just missed making the 60m finals with his time of 7.41. A fun race to watch was the 3200m run as Zack Burrell (10:53.34) and Will Cannon (10:54.22) battled for the win in their heat. Both times were big PR’s. In the final race of the day, the Andreasen’s, Loren Burrell and Hunter Woodhall battled the entire way to finish 2nd in the 4x400m relay in 3:32.22. This moved the Titans into the tie for 2nd place in the TEAM race.
Treston Cullimore, Taylor Riding, Tyler Fessler, Justin Cobabe, Jessop Oliver, Ashton Durbin, and Thomas Griffin also had some seasonal PR’s in their events.
It was a long two-days (how about 83-heats of the 200m dash) , but a "good long". Thanks to all who supported in so many ways. Thanks to Coach Wilcox, Kevin Hansen, and all the parents who put in the long hours and gave up their weekends to help our efforts. And thanks to all who endured to the end, moving hurdles, supporting their teammates, and doing the little things to help the program.
The meet showed that the Titans have the potential to be very competitive on a state level this year in Outdoor Track and Field. How competitive? That will depend on working hard, training correctly, staying healthy, and being committed to becoming the best athlete and teammate possible. Let’s all aim high!!

ALUMNI ACTION
Mayra Franco ran 7.81 in the 60m and 25.38 in the 200m dashes at the Northern Arizona Invitational. Sharlie Dimick ran 5:40.60 in the mile at the same meet. Both run for SUU. Lindsey McFarland Cramer ran 2:22.80 to finish 2nd in the 800m run, Mallory Ashby 20:01.31 in the 5000m run, and Ali Morris cleared 11'00 in the pole vault at the ISU Invitational. All three compete for Weber State. Tyrell Yardley ran 48.06 in the 400m dash while competing for BYU at the Armory Invitational in New York City.
