Titan Track Bulletin - March 24, 2013

LAYTON/NORTHRIDGE TRI-MEET
While the wind and cold may have hampered some events, the Titans still took some strides in the right direction with some big efforts Wednesday. The boys scored 91 points to easily outdistance Northridge (46) and Layton (41). The Lady Titans finished 2nd with 46 points. Northridge won with 70 and Layton trailed scoring 38 points.

Sophomore Brenn Flint had a great meet winning both the shot put (32'10) and discus (106'08). The shot put mark is the #6 all-time at Syracuse and the discus #2 all-time. Suzy Robertson also had a good meet winning the 300m hurdles (51.52) and placing 2nd in the 100m hurdles (17.29). Sharlie Dimick was our other individual event winner as she captured the 1600m run in 5:28.1.

For the boys, Jaxon Worthen won both hurdles running 15.96 in the 110's and 42.23 in the 300's. Nick Merriman moved into the #5 all-time spot in winning the pole vault with an 11'00 clearance. Braiden Tovey’s 45'00 throw won the shot put. Kavika Fonua captured the 100m dash in 11.70 and Daunte Atkinson picked up a win in the 400m dash in 52.52. That was the first time he had run the open 400. Will Kirshner battled down the stretch to win the 800m run in 2:14.8. Landon Greenhalgh’s 4:41.5 captured the 1600m run.

There were some very big PR’s set in the meet, but there is still a long ways to go if we are to reach some individual and TEAM goals by the end of the season. WE CAN (WILL) GET MUCH BETTER. But it will only happen if everyone is committed to the program and decides to pursue excellence with a little more intensity.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Brenn Flint (two great marks in the throws) and Cody Kelley. Cody just does what he’s supposed to do EVERYDAY and keeps setting PR’s. Coincidence? I think not.

DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Titans host the eight Davis County high schools Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be some great competition both days. Davis High is the obvious favorite to win State in 5A boys and girls this year and Woods Cross the favorite in 4A boys. Every event has a potential state champion in the field. It will be a great meet- with your help!!

THANKS to everyone who secured sponsors for the meet. It will really help our program.

UVU INVITATIONAL
Most of the states top programs will be competing at UVU Saturday. This will be another good test for the Titans. We are limited to 30 entries per gender for this meet and the entry deadline is Tuesday. Therefore, we will need to know Monday who is going to be available to compete. We don’t want to waste an entry on someone who won’t be there. Check with parents to see what plans you may have.

SPRING BREAK
YES, we will workout during spring break. Times and workouts will be handed out at the end of the week.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Mar 26/27 - Davis District Championships @ SHS
Mar 30 - UVU Invitational at UVU - 8:00 am

DISCIPLINE
A little thought from Bobby Knight, a Hall of Fame Basketball coach.

"It has always been my thought that the most important single ingredient to success in athletics or life is discipline. I have many times felt this word is the most ill-defined in all of our language. My definition of the word is as follows:
1. Do what has to be done;
2. When it has to be done;
3. As well as it can be done; and
4. Do it that way all the time."

Very good advice.
