Titan Track Bulletin - March 31, 2013
GREAT WEEK FOR TITAN TRACK
This was a great week for Titan Track and Field. There were some great performances on the track as well as some great efforts put in by many members of the TEAM that indicate we are continuing to improve as a program. The Davis District Championships was a huge success. Coaches and athletes expressed how impressed they were at how well the meet was run. This was due to the great support of athletes, coaches, officials, sponsors, etc.. The great week continued with some outstanding performances at the UVU Invitational. This was a real test of endurance.
DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Titan boys finished 2nd to Davis and the Lady Titans 5th out of the eight-team championships. In combined boys and girls team scoring, the Titans finished 2nd.
Suzy Robertson showed dramatic improvement as she ran 47.71 in the 300m hurdles to finish 2nd. That is the #3 all-time mark at SHS. She also finished 4th in the high jump at 4'11. Brenn Flint continued to shine as she finished 3rd in both the shot put (34'01, #3 all-time) and discus (109'04, #2 all-time). Sharlie Dimick (5:22.77) and Bella Williams (5:23.36) placed 3rd and 5th in the1600m run. Those were the #2 and #3 all-time marks. Erin Kibler ran 12:30.98 to place 3rd in the 3200m run. Jaxon Worthen had another big meet as he placed 3rd in the 110m hurdles (15.25), 4th in the high jump (6'01) and 1st in the 300m hurdles in a school record time of 39.51. Kavika Founa’s 11.13 was good enough to place 6th in the 100m dash. In perhaps the most exciting race of the meet, Landon Greenhalgh made up some big ground over the final 200 meters to with the 800m run in 1:58.88. He also finished 4th in the 3200m run. Jake Garver is getting into track shape as shown by his 8th place finish in the 100m dash (11.33) and 4th place finish in the 300m hurdles (42.80). Josh Thalman ran a great race in the 400m dash to place 4th in 51.02. Nick Merriman had a great meet placing 2nd in the discus (141'01, #4 all-time) and 4th in the pole vault clearing 11'00. Spencer Woodhall threw 121'08 to place 6th in the discus. Jace Skidmore leaped 20'10 to finish 4th in the long jump. Mason Woodward (152'07) and Brock Anderson (146'06) placed 5th and 6th in the javelin. Kavika and Caden Call finished 4th and 5th in the shot put, each throwing 43'05. It was a good showing by the Titans with dozens of PR’s.
UVU INVITATIONAL
What a long, but satisfying, day. Congratulations to all who endured the 15-hour round trip marathon. From a coaches aspect, it was well worth it. There were over 60 schools at the meet and the Boys finished 6th (only 5 points out of 3rd) and Girls 34th. In combined scoring, the Titans finished 13th.
In the highlight performance, the Boys won the 4x100m relay in a time of 43.11. That is not only a school record, but also the fastest time run in Utah this year. Kavika Fonua, Jace Skidmore, Brennan O’Neil and Jake Garver had near perfect handoffs to get the stick around in record fashion. Kavika also ran a strong 100m dash finishing 3rd in 11.18. Jaxon Worthen scored in three events placing 7th in the 110m hurdles (15.64), 8th in the high jump (6'02) and 2nd in the 300m hurdles in a school record time of 39.42. Nicholas Merriman cleared 11'06 to finish 6th in the pole vault. Josh Thalman’s 51.02 was good enough for 8th in the 400m dash. Landon Greenhalgh ran 2:02.19 to place 8th in the 800m run to round out the scoring for the Boys.
On the Girls side, Becca Jacobsen cleared 6'00 to place 4th in the pole vault. Brenn Flint’s 32'01 was good enough for an 8th place finish. There were several other performances that just missed scoring. With over 60 schools competing, it was much more difficult to place in this meet than it will be at the State Championships.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Becca Jacobsen (works hard all the time, not afraid to try a new event) and Jaxon Worthen (AofW for two great meets, 3rd fastest time in the state in the 300m hurdles, and catching the bus Saturday).
ALUMNI ACTION
Mayra Franco placed 3rd in the 100m dash at the UVU Collegiate Invitational. Her time was an incredible 12.03. Lindsey McFarland ran 2:21.55 in the 800m and Zach Watson cleared 15'00 in the pole vault. Zach placed 3rd in his first competition since last year. At the Stanford Invitational, Jared Ward ran 28:36.15 to place 3rd in the 10,000m run. That is the #2 mark by a collegiate runner in the nation this year and #3 all-time at BYU.
SPRING BREAK
YES, we will workout during spring break. We will meet as a TEAM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Distance will meet at 8:00 am, sprints and hurdles at 9:00 am, and field events at 10:00 am. Be warmed up ready to workout at those times. I’ve attached a copy of the workouts for those who can’t attend. Try to get in some quality workouts on your own if you are going to be out of town.
STRONG IS BEAUTIFUL ROAD RACE
Get registered now for the Strong is Beautiful Road Race. It will be held April 20th at Jensen Park. This race is being put together by our own Haley Busby (current Miss Syracuse) as part of her platform for the upcoming Miss Utah Pageant. All proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Miracle Network. Everyone should register and run this race. Reminder of my stupid challenge: I will donate an additional $5 for every non-distance runner to beat me in the race. If you can walk, you can "race" in this event. The cost is $15. If you register by Friday, April 5th, you will receive a t-shirt. You can bring your entry form and $$ to practice or drop it off at the Syracuse Rec Center. Make sure you get registered by Friday to get the t-shirt. I’ve attached a flier and registration form. Let’s get the entire Titan nation out to support Haley and the Children’s Miracle network!!

Titan Track Bulletin - March 24, 2013
LAYTON/NORTHRIDGE TRI-MEET
While the wind and cold may have hampered some events, the Titans still took some strides in the right direction with some big efforts Wednesday. The boys scored 91 points to easily outdistance Northridge (46) and Layton (41). The Lady Titans finished 2nd with 46 points. Northridge won with 70 and Layton trailed scoring 38 points.
Sophomore Brenn Flint had a great meet winning both the shot put (32'10) and discus (106'08). The shot put mark is the #6 all-time at Syracuse and the discus #2 all-time. Suzy Robertson also had a good meet winning the 300m hurdles (51.52) and placing 2nd in the 100m hurdles (17.29). Sharlie Dimick was our other individual event winner as she captured the 1600m run in 5:28.1.
For the boys, Jaxon Worthen won both hurdles running 15.96 in the 110's and 42.23 in the 300's. Nick Merriman moved into the #5 all-time spot in winning the pole vault with an 11'00 clearance. Braiden Tovey’s 45'00 throw won the shot put. Kavika Fonua captured the 100m dash in 11.70 and Daunte Atkinson picked up a win in the 400m dash in 52.52. That was the first time he had run the open 400. Will Kirshner battled down the stretch to win the 800m run in 2:14.8. Landon Greenhalgh’s 4:41.5 captured the 1600m run.
There were some very big PR’s set in the meet, but there is still a long ways to go if we are to reach some individual and TEAM goals by the end of the season. WE CAN (WILL) GET MUCH BETTER. But it will only happen if everyone is committed to the program and decides to pursue excellence with a little more intensity.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Brenn Flint (two great marks in the throws) and Cody Kelley. Cody just does what he’s supposed to do EVERYDAY and keeps setting PR’s. Coincidence? I think not.
DAVIS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Titans host the eight Davis County high schools Tuesday and Wednesday. There will be some great competition both days. Davis High is the obvious favorite to win State in 5A boys and girls this year and Woods Cross the favorite in 4A boys. Every event has a potential state champion in the field. It will be a great meet- with your help!!
THANKS to everyone who secured sponsors for the meet. It will really help our program.
UVU INVITATIONAL
Most of the states top programs will be competing at UVU Saturday. This will be another good test for the Titans. We are limited to 30 entries per gender for this meet and the entry deadline is Tuesday. Therefore, we will need to know Monday who is going to be available to compete. We don’t want to waste an entry on someone who won’t be there. Check with parents to see what plans you may have.
SPRING BREAK
YES, we will workout during spring break. Times and workouts will be handed out at the end of the week.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Mar 30 - UVU Invitational at UVU - 8:00 am
DISCIPLINE
A little thought from Bobby Knight, a Hall of Fame Basketball coach.
"It has always been my thought that the most important single ingredient to success in athletics or life is discipline. I have many times felt this word is the most ill-defined in all of our language. My definition of the word is as follows:
1. Do what has to be done;
2. When it has to be done;
3. As well as it can be done; and
4. Do it that way all the time."
Very good advice.

Alyssa Perry, Sam Segura, Mallory Ashby and Suzy won the 4x100m relay in 54.52 and Sharlie, Sam, Mallory and Alyssa won the 4x400m relay in 4:41.3.Jaxon Worthen led the boys as he won the 110m hurdles (15.87), 300m hurdles (42.51) and high jump (6'00). Duante Atkinson had a great debut in a Titan uniform as he won the 100m dash (11.38, #4 all-time) and placing 3rd in the 200m dash (24.34). He also ran legs on the winning 4x100 and 4x400m relays. Kavika, Jace, Brennan and Daunte won the 4x100m relay in a very fast 44.15. In the most exciting race of the day, Daunte, Trevor Olsen, Hudson Gooch and Josh Thalman won the 4x400m relay in 3:42.1. They narrowly defeated the Titan "B" team of Dower, Skidmore, Bigelow and Landon Greenhalgh by less than a second. Thalman fought off several challenges by Greenhalgh as they circled the track. It was a good start to the season. It showed that we have the potential to be very good TEAMS. But it also showed that we have a lot of hard work ahead of us if that is the end result.
