NORTHRIDGE/VIEWMONT TRI
This meet was a good chance for some of you to try some different events and also to improve your region ranking. From that aspect, it was a good meet for the Titans. The Girls scored 80 points while Viewmont finished with 37 and Northridge 36. The Boys had 106.5 to easily triumph over Northridge (30) and Viewmont (19.5).
Picking up victories for the Lady Titans were: Brenn Flint- shot put (34'02) and discus (118'04); Suzy Robertson- 100m dash (13.22, #5 all-time) and 200m dash (27.06, #5 all-time); Adriana McFarland- 1600m run (5:58.5); Sharlie Dimick- 800m run (2:25.4); and Maddy Neyts- 3200m run (13:23.9).
Individual wins for the Boys came from: Braiden Tovey- discus (138'10); Karson Nielson- high jump (6'00) and 110m hurdles (15.36); Caden Call- shot put (49'05); Mason Leishman- javelin (162'00, #4 all-time); Kavika Fonua- 100m dash (11.44); Carson Andreasen- 1600m run (5:01.0); Daunte Atkinson- 400m dash (52.41); Ryan Andreasen- 800m run (2:05.55); and Tanner Robb- 3200m run (11:31.35).
One of the highlights was having 13 4x400m relay teams, even though it was quite expensive.
DAVIS HIGH INVITATIONAL
The weather was wet and chilly, but the Titans still had many great performances in this meet that is the 2nd oldest in Utah. Most of the top athletes in the state were present as well as many from Wyoming. The format is set up so it is basically two meets. The afternoon, or Seeded session, is only for the top athletes in each event. With athletes from all classifications competing, it was more difficult to place in many of the events than it will be at the State 5A Championships.
Girls picking up awards at the Seeded portion of the meet were: Isabella Williams, 2nd 1600m run (5:07.76); Sharlie Dimick, 4th 1600m run (5:11.64, #3 all-time); Brenn Flint, 3rd discus (124'02) and 7th shot put (37'06, #2 all-time); Mallory Ashby, 2nd pole vault (8'06); Suzy Robertson, 2nd 300m hurdles (45.64, just missing her own school record by .08) and 3rd 100m hurdles (15.26); and Cidnee Davies, 4th long jump (16'05.5). Sharlie, Bella, Suzy and Katrina Dunlap all ran great legs to capture 2nd in the 4x400m relay in 4:06.66, easily qualifying for state in the process.
Those placing in the Seeded section for the Boys included: Karson Nielson, 5th 110m hurdles (15.06); Colten Yardley, 6th 110m hurdles (15.11) and 4th 300m hurdles (39.94); Kavika Fonua, 3rd 100m dash (10.96); Daunte Atkinson, 5th 200m dash (22.45); Nick Merriman, 4th pole vault (12'06); and Mason Leishman, 4th javelin (148'06). Karson, Colten, Daunte and Hunter Woodhall placed 3rd in the 4x400m relay in 3:25.40. And in the highlight event, Kavika, Diante Lora, Colton Chadwick and Daunte captured 1st in the 4x100m relay in 42.97. That is the fastest 5A time in the state this year. Daunte had great anchor legs in both relays, making up about 2-3 meters in the last 50 meters to nip Woods Cross at the finish in the 4x100.
Competition in the Open session was also very competitive.
Picking up medals were: Lauren Busby, 3rd pole vault (7'06); Becca Jacobsen, 5th pole vault (7'00); Braiden Tovey, 3rd shot put (44'01.50); Jace Purser, 6th shot put (43'01.5); Daunte Atkinson, 2nd 100m dash (11.33); Bryant Edgerton, 5th 3200m run (10:08.23); Karson Nielson, 4th high jump (5'09); Carrick White, 5th high jump (5'09); Colten Chadwick, Diante Lora, Loren Burrell and Ryan Andreasen ran 3:46.34 to place 5th in the medley relay. Ariel Lantz, Arlyne Arteaga, Katrina Dunlap and Adriana McFarland placed 6th in the medley running 4:44.19.
This was not only a great test for the Titans competing against the best in the state, but also a test of preparing to compete under tough conditions. The constant rain and cold conditions made mental preparation just as important as physical preparation. Most Titans passed the test.

TOP THREE RECORDS
In your Track and Field “Bible”, there’s a list of Titan All-Time Top Three marks. This is a record for the average of the top three marks in each event. Several have been broken this year. New Girls’ marks have been set in the following events: High Jump (Cidnee Davies, Suzy Robertson, Raqual Smith); Long Jump (Jentry Skidmore, Cidnee, Suzy); 100m hurdles (Suzy, Cidnee, Emily Frei); 800m run (Bella Williams, Sharlie Dimick, Adriana McFarland); 1600m run (Bella, Sharlie, Adriana); and 3200m run (Sharlie, Bella, Maddy Neyts). Boys records have come in these events: high jump, tied (Karson Nielson, Mason Leishman, Carrick White); 100m dash (Kavika Fonua, Daunte Atkinson, Diante Lora); and 3200m run (Cody Kelley, Ryan Andreasen, Bryant Edgerton). The importance of these records is that it shows that we have depth in those events. That is what pays off at Region and State.
CONGRATS BRENN FLINT
Brenn was selected as this weeks Standard Examiner Star. This is a great honor- I think the first time a Lady Titan track athlete has ever been so honored. Well-deserved!! The story will run in the SE Tuesday morning. The link is: http://standard.net/
LAST TRI MEET WEDNESDAY
We travel to Weber Wednesday for a tri-meet with the Warriors and Layton. This will be the last chance for many of you to move up in the Region Rankings. You will be excused at 1:20 and the busses will leave at 1:30.
HERRIMAN TWILIGHT INVITATIONAL
The Titans are the defending champions in the Boys division of this meet. It’s a great meet with much of the competition being held under the lights. There will be some great competition as Herriman is the favorite to win both Boys and Girls at State this year. Lone Peak and Brighton also have some of the top athletes in 5A. We are limited to five per event (fewer in some events), so it is important that we know by Monday if you will be able to attend.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
As usual, tough to decide. Katrina Dunlap has worked hard all year and had a big PR in the 300m hurdles at Davis as well as running two great legs on the medley and 4x400m relays. Loren Burrell also had a big week with a 4-second PR in the 800 to go along with his good legs in relays. Emily Frei has improved steadily in the hurdles and appears ready for a big breakthrough in the javelin. Daunte Atkinson had a huge meet at Davis, with his anchor legs in both relays showing what his potential can be. Kavika Fonua had a great 100m dash as well as an outstanding lead-off leg in the 4x100 at Davis. With the right preparation, he may be a favorite to win the 5A 100m title. Finally, Treston Cullimore. He hasn’t (and won’t) score a point for the Titans this year. However, he has not missed a practice or meet and is always the first to arrive and last to leave (along with Mallory and Nick). What little sanity still remains within the old coach can be attributed to their (and several other dedicated Titans) efforts on behalf of the entire TEAM.
ALUMNI ACTION
Lindsey McFarland improved her seasonal best to 2:15.22 in the 800m run at BYU Friday. Tyrell Yardley ran 46.84 to PR in the 400m dash at the same meet. 45 is just around the corner. Erin Kibler ran 2:29.77 in the 800m run in some poor weather conditions at BYU on Saturday. Too bad she didn’t run on Friday. Cory Serfoss ran a couple 400 legs for Villanova at the Penn Relays last week. I wasn’t able to find out his splits.

Titan Track Bulletin - April 20, 2014
APOLOGIES RIGHT OFF THE BAT
After I send out these updates, I always notice (too late) that I've overlooked some obvious achievements that deserved recognition. While those efforts may not be stated in the update, they are not unappreciated. It's a good problem to have when so many great things are happening, it's hard to keep track of all of them. And, there are many great things taking place as the result of some hard work and dedication by so many of the Titans. KEEP IT UP!! Just keep satisfying "The Man in the Glass"- even if the "Old Man" (the senile coach) is negligent in recognizing your efforts.
DAVIS DUAL
It had been a long time since Davis High had lost a dual Track and Field meet, but the Lady Titans brought the streak to an end with a 75-57 victory over the Lady Darts. The Girls won 11 of the 13 individual events in securing the win. The Boys nearly duplicated the feat, but fell to Davis 68-73.
It would take many pages to list all of the highlights of the meet, so here are just a few:
Jentry Skidmore- 1st place 100m dash (13.02), 200m dash (26.96) and long jump (16'11.50");
Brenn Flint- 1st place shot put (36'04) and discus (119'06);
Suzy Robertson- 1st place high jump (5'00) and 300m hurdles (46.64);
Cidnee Davies- 1st place 100m hurdles (15.49) and pole vault (8'00);
Bella Williams- 1st place 800m run (2:23.38) and 1600m run (5:17.10) and
Sharlie Dimick- 1st place 3200m run (11:51.84).
While there were many highlights for the Boys, the throws dominated the meet. Five Titans threw over 46' in the shot put, a feat I have never seen before. Caden Call (51'09), Spencer Woodhall (48'05), Braiden Tovey (46'11), Dallas Besaw (46'08) and Ammon Riley (46'06) all had monster throws. The big marks continued at the discus as three threw over 135' including Tovey (152'08), Nick Merriman (147'07) and Jace Purser (137'01). Mason Leishman completed the throws domination by winning the javelin with a toss of 151'11. Others picking up victories for the Titans were:
Colten Yardley- 110m hurdles (15.29) and 300m hurdles (40.35);
Kavika Fonua, Diante Lora, Colten Chadwick and Daunte Atkinson- 1st place 4x100m relay (44.05); and
Chadwick, Broderic Hall, Hunter Woodhall and Carson Andreasen- 1st place medley relay (3:43.07). This relay was highlighted by an incredible anchor leg by Andreasen. Coming off several weeks of cross-training due to injuries, he fought off all challenges by the Davis runner to secure the victory.
There were many other great efforts that resulted in big points, though they didn’t result in wins. Maddy Neyts, Cody Kelley, Karson Nielson, Daunte Atkinson, Kavika Fonua and Ryan Andreasen were among many who contributed to the impressive TEAM results.

WILDCAT INVITATIONAL
School Records and State Qualifying performances highlighted the Friday evening meet at Woods Cross. In the TEAM scoring, the Girls finished 2nd and the Boys 3rd. In combined scoring, the Titans were 2nd.
Jentry Skidmore had another big meet at she won the long jump with a leap of 17'07.00". This was not only a school record, but also #1 mark in the state for 5A schools. She also achieved state qualifying marks in winning the 100m dash (12.60) and placing 3rd in the 200m dash (26.53). Bella Williams (2:18.12) and Sharlie Dimick 2:18.25) both dipped under the school record for the 800m run and qualified for state in their third events. Brenn Flint shattered the school record in the discus with a throw of 129'11, the #1 5A mark in Utah. Cidnee Davies won the 100m hurdles in 15.67, was 2nd in the high jump (5'00), placed 3rd in the 100m dash (13'00) and also had a huge jump of 17'02.75 in the long jump.
The throws were big again for the Boys. Caden Call’s 51'10 winning throw in the shot put is the #2 all-time mark at SHS as well as the #3 5A mark in Utah. Braiden Tovey threw 47'07 to finish 2nd and qualify for state. He also won the discus with a toss of 144'02. 45 of the 125 points scored by the Boys came from the throws. Other points came from Spencer Woodhall (4th shot put, 46'07 and 6th discus, 132'10), Dallas Besaw (5th shot put, 45'08), Ammon Riley (8th shot put, 45'05) and Mason Leishman (4th javelin, 156'10). Coaches Knight and Murray should be congratulated for the great work they are doing with the throwers.
Other big points came from the following:
Kavika Fonua- 1st 100m dash (11.01);
Colten Yardley- 2nd 110m hurdles (15.25), 2nd 300m hurdles (39.92, #2 all-time and #5 in 5A), 6th 200m dash (23.06);
Karson Nielson- 3rd 110m hurdles (15.29) and 3rd 300m hurdles (39.95, #3 all-time and #6 in 5A), and 4th high jump (5'10);
Will Haddick - 4th place pole vault (11'03);
and
Leishman- 3rd place high jump (6'00).
Sometimes highlights come from efforts that don’t score. Jeff Reed has been pursuing the sub-5:00 1600 all season. After several near misses, he finally accomplished that feat running 4:58.16. He celebrated by spending the next five minutes with his head in the garbage can. Renee Peterson didn’t PR, but showed why distance runners are just the best. That’s a long story for another time.

BYU HEPTATHLON / DECATHLON
BYU touts this event as naming the winners “Utah’s Greatest Athletes”. Over two long days, the girls show their versatility competing in seven events, the boys in 10. At the end of the competition, Suzy Robertson finished in 2nd place against the best in Utah while Nick Merriman accomplished a goal he had set last year in winning the title. Nick showed a great deal of emotion as he accepted the trophy from the Meet Director with a lengthy speech. It went something like this: “Thanks”. Great efforts by two of the best overall Track and Field athletes in Utah.
SEASON WINDING DOWN
With only two weeks left until Region, it’s very important that we all do everything possible to insure that the season ends with our best performances. Some great things (individually and as a TEAM) are within our grasp. Let’s work hard to make sure we finish things off. So far we have had 16 individual state qualifying marks for the Girls and 13 individual and two relays for the Boys. Let’s all keep working hard right through the “finish line”.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
