GREAT START TO 2012!
The USU Indoor meet was a great way to start the indoor competitive season. Two school records were set along with 15 marks that made the Titan All-Time Top Five list. But perhaps even more impressive were the great efforts by so many that were competing at the high school level for the first time.
Leading the way for the Lady Titans was Jaycie Smith. She finished 3rd in the high jump with an indoor school record leap of 4'08. Katrina Dunlap and Jordan Anderson were 4th and 5th clearing 4'06, tying for the #2 all time marks. Katrina also made the all-time list in the long jump with a mark of 12'10.75. Jaydin Hurst made her Titan debut a good one placing 4th in the 60m hurdles in 10.70, the #3 all-time mark. She also ran 8.64 in the 60m dash, the #5 all-time mark. Sharlie Dimick won the 1600m run in a time of 5:53.93. She is already #2 on the list with a slightly better mark from 2011. Erin Kibler placed 4th in the 3200m run in 13:39.80, also the #4 mark on the indoor all-time list. And Cheyna Field had a busy day placing 2nd in the 400 and 800 as well as winning a heat in the 60m dash.
At the BYU Invitational Friday night, Jake Zaugg cleared 13'06 to set the school record in the pole vault. At USU, Zach Watson tied the record in winning the event. Jake was right behind at 13'00. Jaxon Hansen’s 2:01.33 in the 800m run was good enough for 2nd and is the #3 mark on the all-time list. Brandon Yardley had a great race to finish 2nd in the 1600m run in 4:37.6, the #3 mark. He also ran a 53.3 split in the 4x400m relay. Kavika Fonua had a great meet in placing 2nd in the 60m dash (7.17, the #2 all-time mark), 3rd in the high jump (5'06, the #4 mark) and also making the list in the #3 spot in the shot put with a toss of 41'06.50. Jaxon Worthen was also busy placing 2nd in the 60m hurdles in 9.19, the #5 all-time mark, as well as clearing 5'08 in the high jump to place 2nd. This is the #2 all-time mark. Ashton Bigelow showed how much he has improved in a year by finishing 3rd in the 60m hurdles in 9.29. His PR last year- 11.35. Shows what hard work can do. Alex Vanderloo ran 7.32, the #4 all-time mark in the 60m dash, to place 4th. He also had a great 23.8 split in the 4x200m relay. Matt Dunston ran 55.90 to finish 5th in the 400m dash.
There were many other highlights and huge PR’s, such as Cody Kelley’s 5:08.8 in the 1600m run- almost a 20-second improvement. It was great to see athletes jump in and try something new. Mason Woodward followed up a very good 60m dash by throwing the shot put for the first time in his life. His toss of 35'07 was just off the all-time list. Lauren Busby was a busy girl running back and forth from the 60m dash, high jump, 60m hurdles, relay, etc. There were many more great efforts that just missed out on placing or making the all-time list.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as Athletes of the Week were Cheyna Field, Zach Watson and Jake Zaugg. Cheyna was an “ironwomen” in her efforts at USU while Zach and Jake’s 13'06 clearances in the pole vault lead the state.
WEBER INVITATIONAL
The Weber meet will be a bigger challenge. Most of the schools that went to BYU instead of USU will be competing. This is a good meet to try a different event. Don’t be afraid of leaving your comfort zone.
ALUMNI ACTION
Lindsey McFarland had a great collegiate debut at Weber State running 59.49 to place 6th at the Snake River Invitational at Idaho State. She also ran a leg on the 4th place 4x400 relay. Mayra Franco ran 7.98 in the 60m dash and 26.36 in the 200 at the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, AZ. These were great times against some of the top sprinters in the NCAA. Hunter Naisbitt threw 43'07 in the shot put. My guess is he wasn’t happy as he has been over 50' in workouts. Mayra and Hunter are competing for SUU. Sasha Russell, Hannah Williams and Jake Rossmango did not compete this weekend.
