Six Titans went under 5:00 in the boys 1600m run. Brandon Yardley’s 4:31.87 was good enough for 6th place and #3 on the Titan all-time list. Yardley came back after the 1600 to place 5th in the 400m dash in 52.18. That is the #3 mark on the all-time list. Cameron Dower’s 55.87 was a big indoor PR.

Titan Indoor Track Bulletin - Jan 22, 2012

WSU MEET- GREAT JOB TITANS!
The WSU meet was another good meet for the Titans. With over 40 schools represented and large fields in every event (over 100 in the boys 55m dash), the Titans held their own. If the meet would have been scored, the boys would have finished 3rd, just 6 points behind Davis and Riverton. But at this point in time, attitude, effort and improvement are more important than places and points. And good attitudes, efforts and improvements were plentiful.
Spencer Hull got the meet off to a great start Friday evening by winning the shot put with a huge throw of 48'06.50". This was a 5-foot PR, the #2 indoor mark for a Titan, and leads the state 5A throwers. Jarom Hansen’s 39'09 throw put him #5 on the Titan list. Jaxon Worthen cleared 5'10 in the high jump to tie the school record and place 3rd. He also moved into the #3 indoor mark in the 55m hurdles running 8.75. Jake Zaugg and Zach Watson cleared 13'06 in the pole vault to tie their school record and finish 1st and 3rd. Kyle Arigot’s 10'06 clearance is #3 on the all-time list. Mallory Ashby, competing against the boys, had some great attempts at 9' in the pole vault. Mike Russell’s 18'01 in the long jump moves him into the #3 indoor mark. Jordan Anderson tied the school record in the high jump as she cleared 4'08 to place 5th.
Saturday’s action saw many PR’s in every event. Kavika Fonua ran 6.76 to place 4th in the 55m dash. This is the #2 mark in Titan history. Jaxon Hansen’s 2:03.24 won the 800m run. He already leads the state with his mark of 2:01.33 from last week. The 4x400m relay of Jaxon, Mike Russell, Brandon Yardley and Landon Greenhalgh placed 2nd with a time of 3:39.40. Landon also moved into the #5 spot on the all-time list in the 3200m run with a time of 10:41.74.
In girls’ action, Jaydin Hurst and Kenzie Long moved into the #4 and #5 all-time marks in the 55m hurdles with times of 10.30 and 10.31. Katrina Dunlap, Rachel Harward, Lauren Busby and Lindsey Bailey placed 5th in the 4x400m relay. Katrina’s 1:05.5 split makes the all-time list for the 400.
This was a very good meet with some great efforts. It looks like we are going to have several strong events when the outdoor season gets underway. However, it’s obvious that we need more depth in many events. Don’t be afraid to try something different- in workouts and meets. You may find something that’s better suited for your abilities. This will not only help you, but also help the TEAM. We want to be strong in ALL events by the time April and May roll around.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Katrina Dunlap, Lauren Busby, Jaxon Hansen and Spencer Hull. Katrina and Lauren just work hard every day and aren’t afraid to try new and challenging events. Jaxon and Spencer not only won their events last weekend, but also have the leading marks in the state.

UTAH DISTANCE CHALLENGE
The meet will be Thursday evening at the Olympic Oval. The only events contested will be the 400, 800, 1600 and 3200. It will be a great meet to try to set a PR in just one event. We will cover the entry fee. This is a good meet to try a different event- we need 400m runners. Events begin at 5:00 with the following order: 1600, 400, 800, 3200.

SIMPLOT GAMES
A reminder to get your Simplot permission slip turned in by Wednesday. The total cost should be about $120. If money is a problem, talk to me.

UHSTCA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
This meet will be held February 3rd and 4th. It is the indoor state championships. I will hand out information this week at practice.

ALUMNI UPDATE
Hannah Williams ran 5:05.73 to place 7th in a big collegiate meet in New Mexico. That’s a great start to the indoor season. No other former Titans were in action this week.

Titan Indoor Track Bulletin - Jan 15, 2012

GREAT START TO 2012!
The USU Indoor meet was a great way to start the indoor competitive season. Two school records were set along with 15 marks that made the Titan All-Time Top Five list. But perhaps even more impressive were the great efforts by so many that were competing at the high school level for the first time.
Leading the way for the Lady Titans was Jaycie Smith. She finished 3rd in the high jump with an indoor school record leap of 4'08. Katrina Dunlap and Jordan Anderson were 4th and 5th clearing 4'06, tying for the #2 all time marks. Katrina also made the all-time list in the long jump with a mark of 12'10.75. Jaydin Hurst made her Titan debut a good one placing 4th in the 60m hurdles in 10.70, the #3 all-time mark. She also ran 8.64 in the 60m dash, the #5 all-time mark. Sharlie Dimick won the 1600m run in a time of 5:53.93. She is already #2 on the list with a slightly better mark from 2011. Erin Kibler placed 4th in the 3200m run in 13:39.80, also the #4 mark on the indoor all-time list. And Cheyna Field had a busy day placing 2nd in the 400 and 800 as well as winning a heat in the 60m dash.
At the BYU Invitational Friday night, Jake Zaugg cleared 13'06 to set the school record in the pole vault. At USU, Zach Watson tied the record in winning the event. Jake was right behind at 13'00. Jaxon Hansen’s 2:01.33 in the 800m run was good enough for 2nd and is the #3 mark on the all-time list. Brandon Yardley had a great race to finish 2nd in the 1600m run in 4:37.6, the #3 mark. He also ran a 53.3 split in the 4x400m relay. Kavika Fonua had a great meet in placing 2nd in the 60m dash (7.17, the #2 all-time mark), 3rd in the high jump (5'06, the #4 mark) and also making the list in the #3 spot in the shot put with a toss of 41'06.50. Jaxon Worthen was also busy placing 2nd in the 60m hurdles in 9.19, the #5 all-time mark, as well as clearing 5'08 in the high jump to place 2nd. This is the #2 all-time mark. Ashton Bigelow showed how much he has improved in a year by finishing 3rd in the 60m hurdles in 9.29. His PR last year- 11.35. Shows what hard work can do. Alex Vanderloo ran 7.32, the #4 all-time mark in the 60m dash, to place 4th. He also had a great 23.8 split in the 4x200m relay. Matt Dunston ran 55.90 to finish 5th in the 400m dash.
There were many other highlights and huge PR’s, such as Cody Kelley’s 5:08.8 in the 1600m run- almost a 20-second improvement. It was great to see athletes jump in and try something new. Mason Woodward followed up a very good 60m dash by throwing the shot put for the first time in his life. His toss of 35'07 was just off the all-time list. Lauren Busby was a busy girl running back and forth from the 60m dash, high jump, 60m hurdles, relay, etc. There were many more great efforts that just missed out on placing or making the all-time list.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as Athletes of the Week were Cheyna Field, Zach Watson and Jake Zaugg. Cheyna was an “ironwomen” in her efforts at USU while Zach and Jake’s 13'06 clearances in the pole vault lead the state.

WEBER INVITATIONAL
The Weber meet will be a bigger challenge. Most of the schools that went to BYU instead of USU will be competing. This is a good meet to try a different event. Don’t be afraid of leaving your comfort zone.

ALUMNI ACTION
Lindsey McFarland had a great collegiate debut at Weber State running 59.49 to place 6th at the Snake River Invitational at Idaho State. She also ran a leg on the 4th place 4x400 relay. Mayra Franco ran 7.98 in the 60m dash and 26.36 in the 200 at the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, AZ. These were great times against some of the top sprinters in the NCAA. Hunter Naisbitt threw 43'07 in the shot put. My guess is he wasn’t happy as he has been over 50' in workouts. Mayra and Hunter are competing for SUU. Sasha Russell, Hannah Williams and Jake Rossmango did not compete this weekend.

Indoor Update - January 8, 2012

GOOD WEEK OF WORKOUTS
Great job by those who are dedicated and show up each day trying to become the best athlete they can be. You will never regret the efforts.
The USU camps were great!! Everyone that attended learned a great deal- and had some fun. The extra effort will pay off big time. Those who attended will run faster, jump higher and throw farther as they put what they learned to use.
Great job by the distance crew (as usual). Cody Kelley (409), Mike Russell (360), Landon Greenhalgh (356) and Parker Greenhalgh (348) lead the mileage chase for the boys. Erin Kibler (263), Katelyn Davidson (250) and Kayla Berryman (239) lead the girls. Coach Busby is leading the coaches with 313 miles. These are mileage totals since November 1st.
