Titan Track Bulletin - March 3, 2014

GOOD START
Although we only had a couple workouts this first week, there were many things that have created a sense of optimism with the coaches.  The numbers were impressive (hopefully, they will stay impressive), the cooperation great, and, in the Friday workout, the feeling that this group of Titans wants to work hard so they can perform at the highest level possible.  Let’s keep it up!!

FRIDAY WORKOUT
Very impressive results.  For the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and distance athletes, this may not have been the hardest workout of the year, but there will be few that will be tougher.  The following were the top-five in meters covered during the workout:
Girls sprinters/hurdlers/jumpers- Suzy Robertson (1395), RaCail Carter (1322), Cidnee Davies (1315), Nicole Kimber (1310) and Ashton O’Neil (1300).
Boys sprinters/hurdlers/jumpers- Korbin Markos (1535), Mason Leishman (1535), Karson Nielson (1522), Trent Hughes (1490) and Cristian Rivera, Broderic Hall, and William Kirshner (1465).
Girls distance- Bella Williams (3295), Sharlie Dimick (3290), Katrina Dunlap and Becca Jacobsen (3025) and Shay Hoggan (3000).
Boys distance- Cody Kelley (3625), Ryan Andreasen (3570), Tyler Fessler (3565), Bryant Edgerton (3490), and Tanner Robb and Loren Burrell (3400).
Great job by everyone who completed the workout.  It was especially good to see the competitiveness of so many of you who were striving to get just a few more meters out of your body.  Being tough and competitive in workouts translates into being tough and competitive in the meets.

THIS WEEK
MONDAY- Reminder of the mandatory Drug Testing meeting that will take place Monday at 6:00 pm in the Auditorium.  You and your parents must attend unless you have already been at a prior meeting this year for a sport or extracurricular activity.
Let’s be ready for a GREAT week of workouts- and competition.  WE WILL WORK OUT TUESDAY AT 3:00 PM even though there is not a normal school day and there is also a State BB game (11:10 am at the U of U).
The schedule at this time will include an Intrasquad Meet Friday.  If the Boys BB team wins their first two games, the meet will be moved to Saturday.

INTRASQUAD MEET FRIDAY
This meet will pit the Seniors against the Sophomores and Juniors.  Boys and Girls scores will be added together to determine a winner.  Pizza will be served to the winning TEAM.  Details will be posted on the workout board.
FEES / PAPERWORK
Let’s get all of your paperwork turned in and all fees paid as soon as possible.  All of these items must be taken care of before you can compete in a meet or be issued a uniform.

UNIFORMS
The plan now is to issue uniforms Saturday after our 9:00 am workout.  To be issued a uniform you must have completed the following:
*All paperwork turned in;
*All fees paid ($70 participation, $20 transportation, $5 drug testing)
*Be academically eligible (2.0 GPA, no more than 1 F from 2nd term);
*All U’s cleared and paid for;
*Drug Testing Orientation completed and fee paid.

Titan Indoor Track Update - Feb 16, 2014

SIMPLOT GAMES
As usual, the Simplot Games was the highlight of the Indoor Track and Field season. With over 1900 athletes competing, including many who were ranked in the top-ten in the nation, just getting to the finals was an incredible challenge. Several Titans were up to the task.

Cidnee Davies cleared 5' in the trials of the high jump, then equaled her school record of 5'02 in the finals to finish in 9th place. Brenn Flint threw 37'03 to place 12th in the shot put. Isabella Williams and Sharlie Dimick ran 5:13.32 and 5:18.78 to finish 14th and 18th. Those are the #2 and #3 marks all-time at SHS. Isabella, Sharlie, Adriana McFarland and Mallory Ashby ran a school record 10:06.29 to place 9th in the 4x800m relay.

Karson Nielson advanced to the finals in two events. He cleared 5'11 (#3 all-time) in the high jump to finish 11th, and ran 8.57 to place 10th in the 60m hurdles. Nick Merriman cleared 13'03 (#3 all-time) to finish 11th in the pole vault. Cody Kelley, Loren Burrell, and Carson and Ryan Andreasen ran 8:26.53 to place 7th in the 4x800m relay. Loren, Ryan, Broderic Hall and Blake Taurone turned in a 3:49.02 to finish 12th in the medley relay. They made it to the finals by defeating the Titan "A" team by 1.1 seconds in one of the more entertaining races of the meet.

There were many more near-misses as many Titans missed finals by one or two places. One of those was by Cody Kelley. He ran a school record time of 9:56.88 to finish 14th, just two spots out of the finals. The Girls medley relay team of Suzy Robertson, Jentry Skidmore, Cidnee Davies and Mallory Ashby missed finals by .4 seconds. And the Boys "A" medley team of Yardley, Merriman, Nielson and Kelley missed by only .9 seconds.
There were several other great marks that established significant PR’s. Everyone who competed should feel proud of their efforts.

A huge thanks to the parents who drove and helped out with the meet- the Kelley's, Yardley's, Burrell's, Andreasen's and Mr. McFarland, Mr. Ashby, Mrs. Robb and Mrs. Young. It’s quite a sacrifice to give up an entire weekend to help support the TEAM. Thanks to Lindsey Bailey and Sam Segura for their support at the meet and for their help throughout the entire indoor season. They did a great job and made huge contributions to the program. And a big thanks to Coaches Wilcox and Busby for their continued support of the program. I know the distance athletes appreciate them. I hope the entire team also recognize and appreciate the sacrifices they make for Titan Track and Field! I know one old coach certainly does.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Becca Jacobsen, Isabella Williams, Sharlie Dimick, and Carson and Ryan Andreasen. And everyone who cooperated in making Simplot and great trip.

INDOOR WRAP-UP
By the end of the season, Titans had set nine Indoor School Records and 42 performances made it onto the Indoor All-Time Top Five list. Several of those marks also rank among the top performances in the state. I’ve included an attachment that shows where they rank when considering only 5A competitors. While the competition will get much tougher, these marks indicate the Titans have the potential to be a force in the outdoor season. However, potential has yet to score a point at the State meet. Potential plus hard work can equal a State Championship.

ALUMNI ACTION
At the Montana State duals, Lindsey McFarland 2:15.05 in the 800, which will hopefully get her into the Big Sky Championships. In the U. of Washington Invitational, Tyrell Yardley ran 48.40 to capture the 400m dash. Lindsey and Erin Kibler should be in action Saturday at Weber State. Erin will run at 2:30, Lindsey at 3:30. Let’s drop over and watch them in action.

OUTDOOR TRACK
Tentative plan: Outdoor meeting Tuesday, Feb 25th, workouts begin Wednesday, Feb 26th. I’ve attached a tentative Outdoor meet schedule.

Titan Indoor Track Update - Feb 9, 2014

SIMPLOT GAMES REMINDERS
MANDATORY meeting for everyone going to Simplot will be held at Tuesday at 2:40 in room 2118. You must have both waivers completed and your $100 at that time. PLEASE!!

UHSTCA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Olympic Ice Oval was the site of some outstanding performances by the Titans. In the only scoring meet of the indoor season, the Lady Titans finished 2nd and the Boys 3rd. Over 60 schools from Utah and Wyoming competed.

The meet created a great deal of extra work for me as it took a lot longer to update the Performance and All-Time lists as well as School Records. That’s some extra work I really enjoy.

TEAM points for the Lady Titans came from the following:

Cidnee Davies- 1st 60m hurdles (9.45, School Record); 5th long jump (16'06.50, School Record); 6th high jump (4'10).
Suzy Robertson- 2nd 60m hurdles (9.67, #2 all-time).
Mallory Ashby- 2nd pole vault (8'00).
Brenn Flint- 3rd shot put (35'00.25).
Jentry Skidmore- 5th 60m dash (8.20, #2 all-time).
Isabella Williams- 6th 800m run (2:22.88, School Record).
Suzy, Mallory, Isabella and Sharlie Dimick- 2nd 4x400m relay (4:22.63).

Leading the Boys to their 2nd place finish included:
Karson Nielson - 3rd 60m hurdles (8.43, School Record);
Colton Yardley - 5th 60m hurdles (8.78, #4 all-time); 6th triple jump (37'06.50, #5 all-time).
Nick Merriman - 3rd pole vault (13'00, #3 all-time); 4th long jump (20'07, School Record).
Kavika Fonua - 6th 60m dash (7.20).
Caden Call - 7th shot put (45'07.75).
Blake Taurone - 5th triple jump (38'07, #2 all-time).
Taurone, Hunter Woodhall, Broderic Hall and Lucas Pectol- 5th 4x200m relay (1:36.91).
Yardley, Merriman, Nielson and Loren Burrell- 3rd 4x400m relay (3:34.28).

There were many huge PR’s that took place besides the ones scoring points. Here are just a few:
Adriana McFarland - 7 seconds in the 800 and 8 seconds in the 1600;
Gabby Young - 4.5 seconds in the 1600;
Renee Peterson - 16 seconds in the 1600;
Karissa Jacob - 20 seconds in the 1600;
Becca Jacobsen - 18 seconds in the 3200;
Hunter Woodhall - 4 seconds in the 400;
Loren Burrell - 1.5 seconds in the 400;
Cody Kelley - 5.7 seconds in the 800 and 6.3 seconds in the 1600;
Zach Griffin - 7 seconds in the 800 and 5 seconds in the 1600;
Tanner Robb - 6 seconds in the 1600;
Brady Cook - 3 seconds in the 1600;
Lane Dunstan - 9 seconds in the 800;
Zack Burrell - 13 seconds in the 1600;
Tyler Fessler - 5 seconds in the 3200;
Carson Andreasen - 4 seconds in the 3200.

There was another great performance during the meet. That was by the entire Titan TEAM that was so willing to jump in and help out moving hurdles, blocks, etc., to keep the meet moving. It did not go unnoticed by the coaches of other teams. THANKS for showing that the Titans are not just a good team athletically, but an even better group of young men and women.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Titan Indoor Track Update - Jan 26, 2014

WSU INDOOR

Another long weekend at the track produced some more outstanding performances by the Titans. While the "regulars" turned in some outstanding marks, it was some "newcomers" that were equally impressive. Many competed in their first meets and did a great job of setting a mark to improve upon in the future.

In girls’ action, Cidnee Davies continued her impressive indoor season as she won the long jump on her last attempt (15'06), cleared 5'00 to win the high jump in Friday action. Saturday morning was also impressive as she ran 9.05 to finished 2nd and tie the school record in the 55m hurdles and also turned in a 7.90 in the 55m dash, the #3 all-time indoor mark. Amanda Bigelow made her first indoor meet a memorable one as she ran 10.21 in the 55m hurdles, the #4 all-time mark. Jentry Skidmore had another big meet as her time of 7.74 in the 55m dash was good enough to finish 4th, and she also ran 27.78 to place 3rd in the 200m dash. This is the #3 indoor mark at Syracuse. Mallory Ashby cleared 8'00 to win the pole vault and also ran a great last lap in the 800m run, finishing in 2:36.67, just ahead of Adriana McFarland’s 2:39.98. Bella Williams took time away from basketball to win the 1600m run with the #2 indoor mark of 5:24.83. Mallory, Gabby Young, Krissa Jacob and Becca Jacobsen concluded the meet in finishing 2nd in the 4x800m relay.

Nick Merriman had another big meet in winning the long jump with a leap of 19'09, equaling his #2 indoor mark. He also cleared 11'06 to finish 4th in the pole vault and ran 8.52 to place 7th in the 55m hurdles. That is the #4 all-time mark at SHS. Karson Nielson’s 8.24 in the 55m hurdles was good enough to finish 3rd, just ahead of Colton Yardley’s 4th place time of 8.29. They are the #2 and #3 all-time indoor marks. Ryan Andreasen placed 3rd in the 800m run with a 2:04.87. Cody Kelley ran a strong 2nd half of the race to turn in a time of 10:17.76 in the 3200m run. Nick, Loren Burrell, Luke Pectol and Hunter Woodhall finished 2nd in the 4x400m relay running 3:58.0.

There were many big PR’s that didn’t make all-time list or place in the top spots at the meet, but were signs that great things are continuing to take place. Jace Purser had a near 3-foot PR in the shot put and Blake Taurone’s narrow foul in the long jump would have put him on the all-time list. Loren Burrell and Hunter Woodhall had some big performances in the 800 and 400. Tyler Fessler cracked the 11-minute barrier in the 3200 and Will Cannon a big PR in the 1600. Krissa Jacob and Renee Peterson continue to drop their times in the 1600.

All of these performances indicate that things are moving in the right direction for an outstanding outdoor season. For those working hard, keep it up. For those who are less committed, let’s pick it up.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Amanda Bigelow, Mallory Ashby, Cody Kelley and Loren Burrell. While their performances at the meet warrant the honor, their commitment and performance at workouts has been equally impressive. And one more "Honor of the Week" goes to Kevin Hansen. Once again, he endured the entire length of this long meet taking some great pictures. It would be much easier for him to be running a marathon each weekend. Make sure you check out his work at:

http://titanindoortrack.blogspot.com/

UHSTCA STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

There is no meet this weekend. Our next action with be February 7th and 8th at the Olympic Ice Oval in Kearns. This meet is considered the Indoor State Championships and will be the only one we compete in where teams scores are kept. At the end of the action, we want the Titans to be at or near the top. Friday’s action will contest all of the field events as well as the 1600m run, 400m dash and 4x800m relay. The remainder of the running and relay events will be held Saturday. Arrange your schedules so you can compete.

SIMPLOT INFORMATION

I should have all of the initial permission forms by now. If you didn’t turn one in, make sure you get it to me Monday. We will go over some additional information about the trip Monday after school.

Titan Indoor Track Update - Jan 19, 2014

BYU INDOOR- MARATHON WEEKEND

The BYU meet was a great demonstration of the Titan patience and determination. With over 1000 athletes entered, the competition lasted over 16 hours from the first jump at 5:00 pm Friday until the completion of the final relay at 7:15 pm Saturday. And Mallory Ashby, Treston Cullimore, Karson Nielson, Colten Yardley and Nick Merriman were there from start to finish. Their first marathon will probably be much easier.

The meet itself was outstanding producing many nationally-ranked performances. And the Titans were in the thick of the action. Brenn Flint had a great meet throwing 37'08.75 in the shot put to finish 4th. This was the #2 all-time mark in Lady Titan history. She also threw 32'06.75 to finish 3rd in the weight throw, again the #2 all-time mark. Cidney Davies set her 3rd school record in two weeks as she ran 8.47 in the 60m hurdles to finish 2nd. That is the #1 mark for a Utah runner this year. Jentry Skidmore’s 8.39 in the 60m dash as good enough for 9th place and her 27.83 put her in the 6th position in the 200. That moves her into the #4 spot on the all-time list in the latter event. Mallory Ashby cleared 8'00 to finish 2nd in the pole vault. Sharlie Dimick’s 5:34.93 in the mile moves her into the #4 spot on the all-time list. Sharlie, Mallory, Adriana McFarland and Becca Jacobsen ran 3:37.43 in finish 8th in the 4x1 lap relay.

Karson, Colten, Nick and Treston made the most of their hours in Provo as they turned in some great marks and brought back plenty of t-shirt awards. Karson cleared 5'08 to finish 7th in the high jump. That moves him into the #4 all-time spot. He then ran 8.70 to place 2nd in the 60m hurdles. Colten leaped 18'11.75 to place 4th in the long jump and move into the #3 place on the all-time list. He also ran 8.73 in the 60m hurdles to finish 4th and secure the #3 spot on the all-time list. Nick cleared 11'00 to finish 2nd in the pole vault, jumped 19'07 to place 3rd in the long jump, and ran 8.92 good for 5th in the 60m hurdles. His hurdle time is the #6 all-time mark. Treston cleared 9'00 to finish 6th in the pole vault. Kavika Fonua ran 7.17 to place 6th in the 60m dash. This is the #2 mark on the all-time list. In the final event of the meet, the four "iron men" dug deep and ran 2:49.17 to set a school record in the 4x1 lap relay. This was about 26 hours after their first competition began.

There were many other outstanding performances where PR’s and near all-time marks were set. The best overall performance was that so many endured the long meet and supported the TEAM. This includes athletes, parents and, of course, Kevin Hansen taking pictures. THANKS!!! Remember to check out Kevin’s pictures at: http://titanindoortrack.blogspot.com/

Titan Indoor Track Update - Jan 12, 2014

GREAT MARKS AT USU

Through the years, USU has been a hard place to establish good marks. It’s always held early in the season, the crowded facility makes warming up and concentrating on your event tough, and the track is not considered fast. However, the Titans definitely overcame the obstacles and turned in some great performances. Two Indoor Records were set as well as 18 All-Time Top-Five performances established. And perhaps more importantly, there were dozens of performances that were PR’s or, in many cases, first-time efforts that will give you a starting point to chart your progress. It was a very successful start to the indoor season.

Cidnee Davies had a great meet setting Indoor School Records placing 3rd in the high jump (5'02) and winning the long jump (16'04.50). She also finished 2nd in the 60m hurdles with her time of 9.80 the #2 mark on the All-Time list. Jentry Skidmore also had a great day as she placed 3rd in the long jump (15'11.50) and also 2nd in the 60m dash (8.25). Both marks are #2 on the All-Time list. Brenn Flint also had a couple big performances as she threw 33'05 in the shot put (#2 All-Time) and 28'08.50 in the weight throw (#3 All-Time).

Other Lady Titans with outstanding marks included:

Suzy Robertson- 3rd 60m hurdles, 9.97, #3 All-Time;

Mallory Ashby- 4th pole vault, 8'00, #2 All-Time;

Isabella Williams- 3rd 1600m run, 5:28.24, #2 All-Time;

Sharlie Dimick- 8th 1600m run, 5:38.54, #4 All-Time.

Nick Merriman had a busy day as he cleared 12'00 to place 4th in the pole vault. That is the #3 mark All-Time. He also jumped 19'09 to place 6th and establish the #2 mark in Titan history. And he ran 9.14 to finish 6th in the 60m hurdles.

Other top performances were turned in by:

Caden Call- 4th shot put, 46'10.50, #4 All-Time;

Karson Nielson- 2nd 60m hurdles, 8.64, #2 All-Time;

Kavika Fonua- 4th 60m dash, 7.22, just off his 7.17 mark from last year, the #2 All-Time;

Ryan Andreason- 4th 800m run, 2:04.6;

Mason Leishman- 2nd high jump, 6'00, #2 All-Time;

Merriman, Nielson, Colton Yardley and Blake Taurone- 1st place 4x400m relay, 3:49.0.

There were many great performances and many positive things to build on as the indoor season continues. With each practice and each meet, you should feel like you have gained something to help make you better prepared for some continued success.

Thanks to everyone who is making the effort to help the make program successful, including volunteer coaches, parents and athletes who are committed.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Chosen as the first Athletes of the Week were Cidnee Davies and Nick Merriman. Both had incredible meets establishing a combined total of five All-Time marks.

THANK YOU KEVIN HANSEN

Some of you new to the program may not be acquainted with Kevin Hansen. For years he has come to every meet that he can fit into his schedule and taken outstanding pictures of Titans in action. He does this for free- his only reward is the satisfaction he gets from watching you compete and providing some memories for you that will become more valuable as you get older. Make sure you thank him for his efforts. As he gets time, his photos will be uploaded at:
