Titan Track Bulletin - May 19, 2013

THANKS FOR THE GREAT SUPPORT

AGAIN! This was the title last week, but certainly applicable again this week. Thanks to all who supported the TEAM at State, especially those who weren’t competing and made the trip to Provo. Special thanks to Kevin Hansen for his efforts at State, and all year for that matter, taking some great pictures. It was also great to have our administrators, Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Mudrow, showing their support of Titan Track. It makes a difference.

STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

After two long days, the Lady Titans far exceeded expectations in finishing 12th in the team race. The Boys were 6th, with the chance for a 3rd-place finish going down with a pulled hamstring. As usual, the meet resembled a roller coaster with many highs and a few lows during the 36 hours from the first gun to the final finish.

Friday got off to a good start with Bella Williams and Sharlie Dimick running 5:12.63 and 5:14.02 in the 1600m run. While finishing just out of scoring, the times were PR’s and also the #2 and #3 times on the Titan All-Time list. Landon Greenhalgh had about the same fate as his 4:24.02 in the 1600m run left him in 9th place in the 1600. Most years, those times would have put all three in the top-five. Nick Merriman continued the good start by throwing 144'02 to place 6th in the discus. Brenn Flint threw 36'03", just 5-inches off her PR, to pick up a 6th place medal in the shot put. Ali Morris capped off a great day for our field events as she tied our school record in the long jump (16'06.50) to place 4th. Suzy Robertson (100m and 300m hurdles), Jaxon Worthen (110m and 300m hurdles), Karson Nielson (110m hurdles), Josh Thalman (400m dash), Daunte Atkinson (200m dash) and Jake Garver (300m hurdles) all made the finals in those events. Jake’s time of 40.13 was the #2 all-time mark.

Both 4x100m relay teams and the Boys medley and 4x400 relay teams made the finals. The Boys 4x100 (42.49) and medley (3:41.26) had the 2nd-fastest qualifying times, while the 4x400 (3:25.89) had the fastest.

Saturday also got off to a great start with Suzy Robertson placing 6th in the 100m hurdles in 15.71. Jaxon Worthen followed Suzy’s effort with a State title in the 110m hurdles running 14.96. That was redemption for his disappointment last year in the same race. Winning madesa him the 5th Titan to win an individual State Championship. Karson Nielson ran a great race to place 6th in the race in 15.72.

While this was going on, Mason Woodward was involved in a great javelin competition. He took the lead on his final throw, a great toss of 177'05". However, the defending champion and state record holder threw 17" further on his last throw to move Mason to 2nd. A great effort nonetheless. Brock Anderson made finals in the javelin and just finished out of scoring in 9th place. Not bad for his first year throwing the spear. Things kept going well for the Lady Titans as Logan Harker, Sam Segura, Ali Morris and Kenzie Fleming ran 51.29, their fastest time of the year, to finish 9th in the 4x100m relay. And in a huge effort, Jaycie Smith cleared 5'01 to place 5th in the high jump. That tied her school record.

Unfortunately, now things took a turn for the worse. Just after taking the baton in the 4x100m relay, Jake Garver suffered a severe hamstring pull. The hopes of a relay title were laying on the track. It was hard for the old coach to watch this senior who has been such a huge part of Titan athletics for three years, finish his career by being carried off the track by his TEAMmates. Not only has Jake been a big part of the Track success, but he also was a big reason Football made it to the State Championship game and is also the only Titan to ever place all three years at State in Wrestling. This kind of took the wind out of everyone’s sails for a while.

After the setback in the relay, things got going strong again with Josh Thalman picking up a 6th place medal in the 400m dash running 50.62. Jace Skidmore finished his Titan career just missing finals in the long jump. In perhaps the top performance of the meet for the Titans, Suzy Robertson ran 45.56 to place 3rd in the 300m hurdles. This was a PR by 1.2 seconds and a School Record. She ran aggressively from the gun to the finish line and looked more determined than I’ve ever seen her. Huge race by Suzy. Jaxon Worthen followed up his title in the 110's with a 3rd place finish in the 300m hurdles. While he ran a very good 39.98, I think he was missing his little buddy who should have been in the race.

Landon Greenhalgh just missed his PR in the 800m run (1:57.96) to finish (you guessed it), 9th. The medley relay of Brennan O’Neil, Gus Salazar, Will Haddick and Parker Greenhalgh ran tough to place 5th in 3:42.34. Daunte Atkinson had surprised some great sprinters by making the final of the 200m dash, then continued shocking them by running 22.27 to place 7th in the finals. That is the #2 all-time mark at Syracuse. Caden Call threw a PR 47'06 on his last effort in the shot put to finish (here we go again) 9th. A great throw to end the season.

There was more drama in the final event of the meet. Landon, Will, and Josh got the baton around the track to Daunte in 6th place in the 4x400m relay. Daunte took off like he was possessed, passing Weber and getting primed to take down Alta. However, his hamstring, which had been bothering him after the 200, cramped up big-time about 50 meters from the finish. In spite of suffering from severe "booty lock" and near exhaustion, he showed some incredible guts and determination, making it to the finish line where he collapsed on the track. He had still run a 50.3 anchor leg. Perhaps this event was symbolic of the meet: supreme effort, but just a little short of the hoped for results. As coaches, we will take the effort any day and let the results fall where they may. There was not a single event where we felt an athlete gave less than their best. And that’s a great feeling. Congratulations to all Titans who competed at State and supported the TEAM!!

Complete results of the meet are posted at www.runnercard.com. A great deal of video has been uploaded to www.hudl.com. If you haven’t created an account, let me know.

SOPHOMORE / JV REGION

Both Boys and Girls finished 2nd behind Davis Tuesday. Depth was the key to the finish as the only individual victories came from Mason Leishman, Mallory Ashby and Brenn Flint. Mason won the high jump, (6'00, #4 all-time) and Mallory the pole vault (8'06). Brenn won the shot put (36'03), discus (106'10) and javelin (80'04). The 4x400 consisting of the Andreasen’s, Loren Burrell and Colton Yardley won the final event of the meet. Good job sophs.

Titan Track Bulletin - May 12, 2013

THANKS FOR THE GREAT SUPPORT
Thanks to everyone that helped make the Region Championships a big success. Stacey Wilcox and too many parents to list helped us earn some much needed money by running the concession stand. The coaches all did a great job in officiating and making sure the meet was run properly. Coach Berrong did his usual great job announcing- he was busier than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest keeping the meet moving and getting the awards presented. Coaches Wilcox, Jones, Murray, Knight and Busby sacrificed their coaching duties during the competition to ensure the integrity of the meet. They had prepared the TEAM well throughout the season and the Titans were ready to compete. Thanks to all of the Titans who helped out as officials, gate crew, etc.. And thanks to the Titans who competed hard. There were great performances in all aspects of the meet.

REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS- BOYS 2ND, GIRLS 4TH
Some great performances resulted in the Boys finishing 2nd and the Girls 4th in the toughest region in the state. By the end of the meet, there had been 64 Personal Records and 30 State Qualifying performances. There were also two School Records set. It was an incredible two days.

Adriana had two big PR’s in the 1600 (13-seconds) and 800 (6-seconds). Cameron, Ashton, Austin and Brennan wound up their careers on the SHS track in style. And Spencer had a 10' PR in the discus to narrowly miss qualifying for State. There are several more who deserve Athlete of the Week recognition for their great help and support not only for the week, but for the entire season.

ACADEMIC AWARDS
Congrats to Lindsey Bailey, Erin Kibler, Landon Greenhalgh and Parker Greenhalgh. They were named to the Region All-Academic Team. Parker was also selected as a member of the Academic All-State Team. This is a great accomplishment by four outstanding students.

Titan Track Bulletin - May 5, 2013

HUGE WEEK AHEAD
For many Titans, this is the week you have been pointing to for a long time- maybe since the end of the season last year. For seniors, it will be the last time to compete on your home track. While many of you will not be taking home medals or leaving with the excitement of competing at State, you will be taking something far more important: some great memories of the 100's of hours of preparation and competition, and the satisfaction of knowing you have learned numerous life-lessons that will help make you a success in many facets of your life.
As the host school for Region, we will be asking all of you to not only compete to the best of your ability, but also be ready to help ensure the success of the meet.

LAYTON DUAL

This was a good tuneup in preparation for the Region Championships. The Girls won 85-47 and the Boys came out on top 88-44. The Girls were led by Brenn Flint and Suzy Robertson who each had two first place finishes and one second. The Boys won 13 of the 17 events to easily secure the win.
BYU INVITATIONALWhile the TEAM did not go to BYU, two of our athletes went to compete in events that are not contested in most other meets. Ali Morris cleared 9'06 to place 3rd in the pole vault and Nick Merriman scored 5115 points to place 7th in the decathlon. He had a great two-days in the 10-event test of overall athletic ability setting big PR’s in the pole vault (11'10.50) and javelin (140'05).

HERRIMAN TWILIGHT INVITATIONAL
This was a great meet for the Titans. As coaches, we didn’t know what to expect as this was the first time the meet had been contested and the first time we had not gone to BYU. It turned out to be a great alternative to spending two long days in Provo. I think we will be much better prepared for Region. The meet saw some great performances, especially by Coach Knight’s and Coach Murray’s throwers. Caden Call had a 3' PR (47'04.50) and Brenn Flint 2 ½' PR (36'08) to both qualify for State in the shot put. Braiden Tovey and Kavika Fonua also had 2' PR’s in the shot. Brock Anderson PR’ed by 10' (159'02) to qualify for State in the javelin. In other great performances, Suzy Robertson qualified for State in winning the 100m hurdles (15.63) and also won the 300m hurdles (48.00). Landon Greenhalgh ran 4:23.81 to qualify for State in finishing 2nd in the 1600m run. Josh Thalman won the 400m dash in 50.20 to also reach the State qualifying standard. Jake Garver qualified for State as he ran 40.72 to finish 3rd in the 300m hurdles. Mason Woodward threw the jav 173'03 to win the event. Jaxon Worthen won both hurdles in 14.92 and 40.09. He has already qualified in both events. And in the final event of the evening, Landon, Josh, Will Haddick and Daunte Atkinson ran 3:27.91 to win the 4x400m relay and qualify for State. Going into the relay, Herriman had a 1 ½ point lead over us, but the win secured the 1st place trophy for the Titans by a scored of 173.5 to 169!! Lone Peak was 3rd with 98 points. Lone Peak won the Girls title with 122.5 points while the Lady Titans were 4th with 104. That was just 10 points out of 2nd place. The results don’t include the 3200m run, so I’m pretty sure that would move the Girls up to 3rd place. To show the power of the TEAM, we scored in 30 of the 34 events. And in three of those events we didn’t score in, we didn’t have athletes compete.
Those scoring points were:
Suzy Robertson- 1st 100m hurdles (15.68, #2 all-time), 1st 300m hurdles (48.00);Sharlie Dimick- 1st 800m run (2:23.34, #2 all-time);Ali Morris- 1st pole vault (10'00, School Record), 3rd long jump (15'09.25);Mallory Ashby- 2nd pole vault (8'06, #3 all-time), 6th 400m dash ();Brenn Flint- 3rd discus (107'07), 2nd shot put (36'08, #3 all-time)Erin Kibler- 3rd 1600m run (5:40.59), ?? 3200m run;Isabella Williams- 2nd 3200m run (??); Maddy Neyts- 7th 1600m run (5:57.78!);Adriana McFarland- 7th 800m run (2:39.51);Jaycie Smith- 3rd high jump (5'00);Logan Harker, Sam Segura, Alyssa Perry, Mickenzie Fleming- 4th 4x100m relay (52.37);Logan, Sam, Lindsey Bailey, Maddy Neyts- 4th medley relay (4:49.17);Sharlie, Logan, Sam, and Lindsey- 3rd 4x400m relay (4:17.78). Boys scoring points included:
Jaxon Worthen- 1st 110m hurdles (14.92) and 300m hurdles (40.09);Karson Nielson- 4th 110m hurdles (15.68), 7th 300m hurdles (42.56);Jake Garver- 3rd 300m hurdles (40.72, #4 all-time), 5th 200m dash (22.99);Ashton Bigelow- 5th 300m hurdles (42.48);Kavika Fonua- 2nd 100m dash (11.15), 4th shot put (46'09, #7 all-time), 7th 200m dash (23.62);Daunte Atkinson- 4th 100m dash (11.38), 5th 200m dash (22.96, #4 all-time);Landon Greenhalgh- 2nd 1600m run (4:23.81, #2 all-time, fastest by a Titan ever run in Utah);Parker Greenhalgh- 7th 1600m run (4:32.77);Josh Thalman- 1st 400m dash (50.20, #5 all-time);Ryan Andreasen- 2nd 800m run (2:04.87);Will Kirshner- 7th 800m run (2:09.92);Tom Hill- 6th 3200m run (10:24.14);Will Haddick- 2nd pole vault (11'06, #5 all-time);Nicholas Merriman- 2nd discus , 3rd pole vault (11'00);Jace Skidmore- 2nd long jump (20'00);Mason Woodward- 1st javelin (173'03);Brock Anderson- 4th javelin (159'02, #3 all-time);Weston Flynn- 7th javelin (143'08);Caden Call- 3rd shot put (47'04.50, #6 all-time);Braiden Tovey- 5th shot put (46'02, #8 all-time);Jace, Gus Salazar, Brennan O’Neil, Cameron Pingree- 4th 4x100m relay (45.69);Gus, Brennan, Cameron Dower, Parker- 3rd medley relay (3:53.03); andJosh, Daunte, Will Haddick, Landon- 1st 4x100m relay (3:27.91). REGION ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS
We host the Region One Championships Wednesday and Thursday. EVERYONE will be involved as a competitor or official- many as both. It is mandatory that you are at the Monday and Tuesday workouts and that your schedule is planned so you can be at the meet both days. It is also mandatory that you stay until the meet is over each day.
Monday night is the coaches Seeding Meeting where final entries for the meet will be determined. I’ve attached a schedule for the meet- there may be some minor changes made at the Seeding Meeting, but I doubt it.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Selected as the Athletes of the Week were Ali Morris, Ashley Rodriguez, Brock Anderson, Kavika Fonua and Will HaddickAli keeps moving her school record in the pole vault higher. Ashley has just worked hard every day for three years and never gets the credit she deserves. She makes the TEAM better. Following a disappointing end to his high school football career, Brock has rebounded nicely and is going to leave SHS with some great Track and Field memories. Kavika keeps demonstrating that he can do about any event (as long as it’s shorter than 400m) in the sport. And Will’s patience and cross training is now paying off as he PR’ed in the pole vault and also ran his fastest split 4x400m relay.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
May 8/9 - Region Championships at SHS - 3:30
May 14 - Soph/JV Region at Davis High
May 17/18 - State Championships at BYU
